We have a classic two seat convertible British Sports car for you this month, the iconic TRIUMPH SPITFIRE. The modern styled and streamlined Spitfire was designed by Michelotti in the late 1950s, and, during its 18 year production run, over 300,000 were manufactured.
Tony and Janet Singleton purchased their renovated, “canary” yellow Mark 4 Spitfire in Nicosia in 2017, from the second owner. Affectionately known as “tweety”, named, for obvious reasons, after the famous cartoon character Tweety Pie. This matching numbers car, which dates from 1973, is powered by a 1296cc petrol engine, and still carries its original number plates.
This registration number was recently recognised by the car’s original owner whilst it was on display at the Ayia Napa Classic Car Show. He was surprised and delighted to be re-acquainted with his car, and presented Tony with a photograph that was taken nearly 50 years ago. Imagine Tony’s surprise when he discovered that his Spitfire was originally painted red!
You may also recognise this Classic Car as it has been featured in not one, but two television advertisement campaigns, for Keo Beer and Coke Cola, both of which can still be viewed on Youtube.
If you see “Tweety” being driven round Paphos please give Tony and Janet a wave or if you wish to have a closer look come along to one of the PCVC events. You will find full details of these on our Facebook page, or visit our website (www.paphosclassicvehicleclub.com), or telephone 97760997.
