Paphos Classic Vehicle Club

If you were asked to name something good that came from Sweden, you would probably answer “Abba, Ikea, or meatballs”! However, I would have answered “Volvo cars and the Mobergs”.

Our Classic for the Month of November is the hugely impressive 760 Volvo saloon which is owned by the Swedish Family Moberg, Fredrik,????????????.

You will instantly recognise the 760 as a 1980s Volvo as it styling is typical of this manufacturer and that era, but this car is a bit of a wolf in sheep`s clothing. The angular shaped family saloon bodywork covers a V6 petrol engine of 2.8 litre capacity. This engine was the result of a joint venture between Volvo, Peugeot and Renault, and produces 170hp, giving the car an amazing top speed of 190 kph (118mph). The 760 topped the Volvo range when it was introduced in 1982 and was renowned for its spaciousness, build quality and reliability. They proved to be deservedly popular, with over 183,000 being manufactured over an 8 year period.

This particular right-hand drive car was built in Volvo`s Kalmar factory in Sweden for the Japanese market and spent the first 30 years of its life in that country. It returned home in 2020 and was discovered 3 years later by Fredrik when it was offered for sale on a Swedish online website. Whilst he was interested in classic Volvos, as a family man, he was not really looking for a saloon. However, this one appeared to be in exceptional condition, so he filed it away in the back of his mind. Twelve months later the Mobergs were back in Sweden on their annual visit when Fredrik convinced the family that a visit to a car showroom in Falun was a good way to spend a Tuesday morning. A low, no warranty, bid was made, a deal was eventually done, and the Moberg family had their classic Volvo. The car was containerised and shipped from Sweden to Cyprus, a lengthy and expensive process, but was at least free from import duties, having been transferred within the EU.

The low mileage car, with only 80,000 km on the clock, is in an exceptional good condition, the white paintwork is unmarked and the velour seats, (very sensible in the Cypriot climate), look showroom fresh. However there were a few mechanical issues which Fredrik has addressed, once he had located the correct parts of course. The whole family are now enjoying their Volvo 760 in Cyprus and are regular attendees at PCVC`s events.
