At last the cooler months are upon us, which can only mean one thing; time for even more walking football. And what a start for Pafos United Walking Football Club. The club was invited to take part in an Over 55’s tournament held in Larnaca on October 10th. Our PUWFC PUMAS team came away as Champions, beating the well-respected visitors from the UK, Old Burgundians Pimlico. It looked as though we might struggle as none of our recognised goalkeepers were available. However, under the sterling leadership of Paul Brock and tremendous goalkeeping skills of Dave Perkins, PUMAS won 2 – 0 on penalties. PUWFC put two teams out on the night, and the second team PUWFC LYNX, only lost the Plate final on penalties to Wembley FC.
There were outstanding performances all round, with walking football played in the true spirit of fun and friendship. Out thanks go to our friends from Old Burgundians Pimlico.
A mention also must go to our PUWFC officials Tony Watson and Mark Farnsworth who officiated in a very professional and fair manner. Still on officials, congratulations to our own Kim Solly for passing her referee’s assessment and she is now upgraded to a ‘tournament plus’ referee. Well done Kim.
Taking a break from competitive football, a very enjoyable evening’s walking football was held on September 15th., in memory of our late, great friend Alan Clarke. It was the club’s honour to be able to donate €376 to St. Michael’s Hospice.
This month we congratulate our long-term club member, Paul John for being awarded September Player of the Month. Paul has been with us from the early days of the club. A great example of someone using walking football to overcome adversity and get back on the pitch. He remains a constant threat on goal.
In other news; we are very pleased to say that Malcolm Newell has now been awarded the refereeing status of WFA tournament-level certification. Congratulations Malcolm!
As always, come and see us on a Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. or Friday mornings at 8 a.m. at the Fair Game Sports Centre, Tremithousa.
