News From St Barnabas’ Anglican Church, Limassol and St Lazarus’ Church, Pissouri

This has been a summer of change, not only with the weather but personnel within our diocese. Bishop Michael retired on the 8th of June, we send our very best wishes to him and Julia for a long and happy retirement and hope to see them in our congregation from time to time.

Also, our retreats minister, Maggie Le Roy leaves this month to take up a new post in the UK. She has been a wonderful friend and supporter of our church for many years. Her last visit to St Barnabas’ was on 11th June when she was able to join us for lunch following our service to celebrate St Barnabas Day. We wish her well as she takes up her new post in the Southall district of London.

It was a great pleasure to welcome Matthew Gaw from Northern Ireland, currently in training for ordained ministry within the Church of Ireland. He spent a few weeks here training and shadowing Father Ian as he went about his daily and weekly duties. He was a delight, and once we got used to his broad Northern Irish accent it was lovely to converse with him.

Mission Upgraded!
I am sure many readers would know about the Mission to Seafarers centre that is the Eurogate Terminal in the Port of Limassol. Before Covid came and turned our lives upside down, the Mission had over 40 volunteers. Sadly, our volunteer numbers have dwindled. However, all is not lost! The Seafarers’ centre has been renovated and an additional area has been added to make a ‘garden’ area. The centre has been transformed and is open every day to enable the Seafarers to come and go at any time.

What we are in need of now though is a team of ship visiting volunteers… If you are interested, please do get in touch! Contact details at end of article.
