Twenty-one new cases were detected late on Tuesday evening, adding to the 62 announced earlier, bringing the daily total to a record 83.

The health ministry said further details about the cases will be given on Wednesday. Most of the cases are in Limassol where a number of clusters has been observed.

Authorities are still investigating 23 of the cases announced earlier in the afternoon to see how they contracted Covid-19.

Three of the new cases concern people arriving from abroad on Monday, two from London and one from Athens.

One person was an inpatient at the Nicosia general hospital.

Another person was tested after presenting symptoms last Saturday. They arrived from Athens on September 26.

One woman from a village in the Famagusta district is also among the latest cases. She was tested as part of the programme to check 3,000 in the Larnaca and Famagusta districts.

Twenty-two people are contacts.

One person is a student nurse who is doing her practice at the Nicosia general hospital. She is a contact of the first student nurse at the University of Technology (Tepak) found positive to the virus. She was in self-isolation when she tested positive.

Another student at Tepak, who is a contact of the student nurses, was also found positive.

A further case is another contact of one of the student nurses detected on Monday.

The other four are a group of friends who frequent the bar along with the Frederick University student and his contact who was announced positive on Monday. The bar buys nargileh products from Mr Nargilax, where five people have been found positive so far. Among Tuesday’s new cases is a person working at Mr Nargilax but was not recorded as a contact of the other cases.

One case is part of the hairdresser salon cluster in Limassol.

Two people are family contacts of a person who had arrived from Italy and was found positive on October 7.

Earlier in the day Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou said he had called an urgent meeting of the advisory committee for Wednesday to discuss the situation.

The minister said he was very worried about the recent surge in coronavirus cases, after being briefed on the number, up until that moment, of new cases detected during the past 24 hours.

On Monday 41 cases were detected. The second highest daily number was 58 cases announced on April 1.

The health ministry said the transmission chains discovered during the past few days but also of the number of cases added to these chains means that the health protocols are not fully observed. As a result, the virus is spreading in workplaces and restaurants, and mainly in places frequented by young people.

There is also an increase in the number of people tested after presenting symptoms. “This sounds the alarm for us as the increase of symptomatic coronavirus carriers shows the possibility of an increase in the people who will need hospitalisation in the next period is also very high,” he said.

It also recalled that last week three people died in four days “which is also worrying.”

The total number of cases is now at 2,130.
