The Pine Processionary Caterpillar

You may have seen or heard about the Pine Processionary Caterpillar in Cyprus. This is a hairy caterpillar with candy floss type nests that causes so many health problems to both adults and children. They cause skin and scalp rashes, major eye problems, allergic reaction and apoplectic shock. They are very dangerous to dogs and cats which can result in your pets having drastic surgery and contact with these caterpillars can also be fatal for pets.

The caterpillar nests are found mainly in Pine trees but can also be found in Cedars, Oak and Fir. You can also find nests in garden bushes, shrubs and even just on ground level in preparation for the hibernation period. In 2016/17 the Cyprus Forestry Commission issued a directive that they would start blanket spraying in forest areas against the Pine Processionary Caterpillar from November 2016 to March 2017, to pre-empt and combat an expected major outbreak of these caterpillars. In accordance with Forestry Commission advice, Cyprus Tree Services now offer Tree Spraying Services to the general public, including Complexes, shopping areas and schools; in fact anywhere these caterpillars could be a problem.
