Walking Football In Cyprus

It is over! After months of preparation, history has been made in Spain. For the first time ever, a Cyprus Representative team took part in the 2025 Walking Football World Nations Cup, held in Torrevieja from October 21st to 24th.

WFiC entered the Men’s Over 50 competition. This consisted of two groups of eight nations. The top four in each group going through to the knockout stages.

On Monday 20th, we were welcomed by Formentera Walking Football Club to their excellent facility to play two friendlies against the hosts, followed by the reigning world champions, England Over 50’s.

Then on the 21st the competition started with a fanfare of nations walking into the stadium, and the playing of each national anthem. Cyprus’ first game was against Morocco; Cyprus 1 -0 Morocco. Next up were Japan; Cyprus 2 – 1 Japan. 0 – 0 against Canada. After six games it was between Cyprus and Wales for the final qualifying group place. A tense, close game saw Wales go through 1 – 0.

The whole squad can be proud of showcasing Cyprus. Many friends were made. Lots of interest in teams visiting the island in the future.

Who won? Well, it was not too unexpected to see England almost make a clean sweep of all age groups. But in reality, everyone that took part won.

Over 600 people (senior people!) took part. It was a spectacular event and can only encourage more nations to kick-off walking football in their communities.

Finally, to close this historic adventure, we cannot forget the many people who made this vision come true, by making financial contributions. So the entire squad wishes everyone a sincere “thank you”.
