Understanding Your Kidneys: Small Organs, Big Responsibility

The Paphos Kidney (PKA) Association

Most of us rarely think about our kidneys—until something goes wrong. Yet these two small, bean-shaped organs play a vital role in keeping our bodies healthy every single day.

Your kidneys work around the clock to filter waste and excess fluids from your blood. They help control blood pressure, balance important minerals, and produce hormones that keep your bones strong and your blood healthy. In short, they are essential to life.

Unfortunately, kidney disease often develops quietly. Many people have no symptoms in the early stages, which is why it is sometimes called a “silent disease.” By the time signs appear—such as swelling in the legs, fatigue, or changes in urination—kidney damage may already be advanced.

The good news is that many cases of kidney disease can be prevented or managed with simple lifestyle habits. Here are a few steps everyone can take:
· Control your blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
· Stay hydrated, especially during the hot months.
· Eat a balanced diet with less salt and processed foods.
· Avoid smoking and limit alcohol.
· Get regular health checks, especially if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease.

At the Paphos Kidney Association, we support patients and their carers through education, practical assistance, and community initiatives. Our goal is to ensure that no kidney patient in our region feels alone in their journey.

Early detection saves lives. A simple blood or urine test can reveal how well your kidneys are working. If you haven’t had a check-up recently, consider speaking to your doctor—especially if you are over 40 or have risk factors.

PKA News: During the course of February, we have purchased the upgraded software for the Therapy Data Management System (TDMS) at the Renal Unit in St. George’s Hospital at a cost of €6500 plus vat. It is now installed and working satisfactorily.

Together, as a community, we can raise awareness, support those in need, and promote healthier lives.

The PKA celebrated World Kidney Day on the 12th March with an event (see picture) that raised €1900 towards equipment for the Paphos renal unit in the St. George’s hospital. Entertainment was provided by singers Darrell Williams, Tina Chester and Ann Taylor. Many thanks to them and to everyone who helped organise this very entertaining gig.
