The Anglican Church of Paphos, July 2023

June proved to be another busy month, celebrating two major Festivals – Ascension Day and Pentecost – holding weekly services, conducting regular pastoral and community activities within the Parish and raising money for local charities.

Our annual Ascension Day Service held, as usual, in Pykni Forest, Peyia attracted an enthusiastic congregation from all three of our churches, where we celebrated Jesus rising to heaven with an al-fresco Communion. This was followed by a ‘bring your own’ lunch which many of the congregation attended.

On Saturday, 27th May our fundraising team presented a brilliant Charity Variety Show ‘For one night only’ sponsored by Sapphire Diner and Rock & Sole, at the Stage One theatre in Emba. The theatre was almost full with the audience enjoying some excellent talent – professional and amateur, both individuals and groups.

Chris Andre was magnificent playing and singing with his guitar and also playing his ‘fiddle’ and Caz Hill a very talented young lady from the UK sang both popular and classical songs. The show also featured young dancers, a monologue, duets, soloists, the Harmony choir and Spellbound, a Ladies Barber Shop chorus.

The raffle held on the night, with prizes donated by local businesses and individuals, coupled with the proceeds from ticket sales, raised in total some €3,100 which was shared between the church and the three charities. We would like to thank all those who took part or helped in any shape or form but especially the people who bought tickets, came, and participated.

The church usually selects one charity each year and carries out activities to raise funds. This year we selected three smaller charities who will benefit from our fund raising, they are: The Alzheimer Group, Paphos branch; The Regional Volunteer Association, Polis District; and The Learning Refuge all who help those who are sick, hungry, homeless or in need of support including completing Government forms and learning new skills so that they can find work. (We are working alongside The Learning Refuge in providing bicycles to help refugees to get mobile. To date, we have given out 15 bikes and we currently have 10 people on the waiting list.)
