A Busy Start to the Race Season
With the race season firmly underway, it’s been a busy period for Paphos Running Club members.
Nicosia – Chilly and Challenging
The Nicosia Marathon took place on 18th January and once again delivered a memorable experience.

The route passes landmarks including the Liberty Monument, Famagusta Gate and the narrow streets of the Old Town, before heading onto wider modern roads.
Conditions were chilly, but ideal, with eight PRC runners competing. Performance of the day came from Karen Bury, who completed the marathon in 4:25:35, finishing 28th female overall and first in her age category.
Kevin Phillips ran the half marathon in 1:36:29 placing second in his category, while Thecla Strydom finished in 1:48:58, fourth in hers. Nina Smith also enjoyed success, finishing first in her age group with a time of 2:39:47.
Kambos – Beautiful and Brutal
A week later club members swapped roads for trails at the Kambos Mountain Race. With numbers limited and a reputation for tough terrain, the event offered a 10km race for adventurous runners and a demanding 22km option aimed at experienced mountain athletes.

The longer 22km route included 1,420 metres of climbing and plenty of mud, steep ascents and tricky descents. The event was well organised and clearly marked, with PRC runners staying overnight at Kykkos Monastery and enjoying generous food and drink at both the start and finish. 22km results were 04:47:39 for Norah Mwanzau, and 04:47:43 for Chetna Grimshaw, while Sarah O’Toole and Carla Poole completed the 10km in 01.55.51 and 02:15:17 respectively, all four achieving podium places in their age categories.
Pervolia – Fast, Flat and Longer Than Expected!
Road runners returned to action at the Pervolia Half Marathon on 25th January. Starting in Larnaca’s Demokratias Square and finishing in Pervolia village, the scenic route runs along the coast, by the salt lakes and through agricultural land. Known as a fast course, it provided a surprise when runners discovered the actual distance was closer to 24.3km!
Despite this, three PRC runners Chris Coleman, Peter Portnoi and John Kew all achieved podium places in their age categories, with times of 2:05:48, 2:39:23 and 1:48:52 respectively.
Sights are on the TUI Cyprus Marathon
The TUI Cyprus Marathon takes place from 7th to 10th March, with the main races held on Sunday 8th March. As the biggest international sporting event in Paphos, it is a highlight of the running calendar with many of our members currently in training. PRC runners and volunteers will play a key role, both taking part, and supporting the event on the course and behind the scenes. Spectators are warmly encouraged to come and cheer the PRC yellow vests and other runners.
