Paphos Running Club: December 2023

This is a busy time of year for races, so here are just a couple of examples of our recent achievements. Next month we will have the results of various marathons and the 4-day challenge to report, so watch this space.

Running:

Even with many great examples of running exploits to choose from this month, the one which stands out most will be no surprise to club members. In August, 77 year old Chris Coleman ran 100 miles (161kms) in less than 23 hours. A couple of weeks later he ran a 5km race in less than 22 minutes, and this month, he took part in the gruelling Olympusman half Ironman trail run, finishing high up the rankings ahead of many several decades his junior.

Biking:

The International Olympusman Half Ironman on 4th November is generally recognised as one of the toughest in the international calendar.

Sarah O’Toole bravely chose this as her debut half-ironman, which tells you all you need to know about her grit and determination! She smiled throughout, never looked distressed, and finished 2nd in her age group and 3rd lady overall.

Here Sarah is 5 hours into her 88km ride from Paphos Harbour to Troodos, riding smoothly around one of several steep hairpin bends near the top.

Swimming:

Oceanman is an international open water swim series with events around the world and the Ayia Napa event on 4th November saw over 300 swimmers taking part. The series finale is the Oceanman World Championships in Thailand Dec 2023.

Dmitri Vinogradov came 3rd in his group for the 10k, Martin Hodge came 3rd in the 5km, so both qualified for the World Championships in Thailand, as did Dmitry’s wife Katerina Vinogradova for the 5km ladies race.

Hiking:

Our hiking section is thriving with walks every week catering for those wanting shorter easier routes as well as those preferring tougher longer routes, all followed by lunch in a convenient hostelry.

Recently, 19 of us went on a 4-day hiking trip involving 3 walks, some nice food with the odd libation, and naturally some retail therapy for good measure!

Paphos Park Run 5th November

With a record attendance of over 100, this event went extremely well and as usual we won several age groups with Lisa Gwynne yet again topping the age-related table with an impressive 85.8% performance.
