After our short winter break, we got back to the business of walking football in early January. It is so easy in these chilly months to forget about going through the correct warm-up routine. We see so many pulled thigh and calf muscles. That’s why our warm-up routines prior to our practice sessions is so important and use the warmth of your own house to go through gentle stretching exercises before attending one of our sessions. Coming onto the pitch and hoofing a football as hard you can without warming up will lead to an injury. We are seniors; it takes a long time to recover. So don’t forget – warm up correctly.
This month we congratulate Dave Chatterley for being awarded January Player of the Month. Dave is a very rare commodity; he’s a goalkeeper. Strange people are goalkeepers. Throwing themselves all over the penalty box; getting hit with the ball too many times. But we need them, we need more. So, if you are an experienced goalkeeper and over fifty years old, or could use your experience to coach the keepers we have, come and see us.
We are always pleased to welcome overseas teams coming to visit Cyprus. A bit of a holiday and a few games of walking football thrown in. In March we are welcoming Hawkwell Athletic from the UK. A three-club round robin tournament will be held on March 17th.
In April we will be delighted to host the England Kicking Cancer team. Over the past few months, we have been trying to get enough interest to put together a local Kicking Cancer team. We are still working on it, so if you fit this group, make contact or drop in and see us; as always, we hold sessions on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. or Friday mornings at 8.30 a.m. at the Fair Game Sports Centre, Tremithousa.
Then before the onset of summer, we have Thames WFC returning. It will be a pleasure to play a couple of games against a very good side.
Don’t forget to look us up on Facebook or find our website puwfc.com. You can email us at info@puwfc.com or even call us on 96742836. New players, goalkeepers, and potential referees, ladies and gents, are always welcome. See you next month.
If you haven’t had enough of walking football, listed in to our very own Charlie talking walking football, league football, Pafos FC, anything to do with football on Sapphireradio.com.
