The health ministry on Sunday announced 63 new cases.

Around one third of cases were contacts of people already tested positive to the virus.

In total 3,688 lab tests were carried out during the past 24 hours. One third of these lab tests concerned tests given to passengers at the airports.

Five of the 63 new cases were among those passengers. The rest of the cases were among the tests processed by all the labs that operated on Sunday, the health ministry said, adding that Limassol’s two biggest private labs did not operate during the weekend.

Twenty-two cases are contacts of people already tested positive to the virus. Two cases are still under investigation.

The ministry said that one in 17 people who were declared as contacts were found positive to the virus.

“This leads to the conclusion that there are active transmission chains,” the ministry said, calling for strict adherence to the measures in place.

The total number of cases is at 2,644.

The ministry also expressed concerns over the number of patients with Covid-19 in hospital.

In total 19 people are in hospital, two of which are intubated.

According to the latest data from the health ministry, the median age of cases detected in the last four weeks, up to October 14, is 31 years.

The majority of cases, 80 per cent, concerned people between 18 and 59. Ten per cent were children up to the age of 17 and the rest 10 per cent concerned people over 60.

Of the 623 cases detected between September 17 and October 14, some 54 per cent were male and 46 per cent female.
