It is I, Lara Mitchell, Social Secretary egg-stra-odinaire filling in for the lovely Hugh Atkins while he and his lovely wife go off gallivanting to enjoy their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations Liz and Hugh on 60 years of married bliss. Enjoy your wonderful cruise, you have earned it!
We enjoyed another eventful month at the sailing club. Our members Geoff and Liz Evans prepared a delicious chicken and chorizo dinner packed with local produce: tomatoes, potatoes, herbs and spices with plenty garlic bread and jacket spuds, which were enjoyed by all who attended. Our Bingo Night was also well attended, who knew the lure of €5 prizes per game would prove so attractive?
We have an important Health and Safety talk coming up on the agenda and this week we will be hosting ‘Battle of the Sexes’. Two teams, three courses, what could possibly go wrong. Apart from the obvious weight gain after the event?
We celebrated Easter in style with a roast dinner with traditional turkey with all the trimmings or pork and crackling (or both if you were feeling particularly greedy!) all served with roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings and a seasonal selection of vegetables. This was all finished off with a particularly scrumptious chocolate and baileys mousse or homemade syrup sponge and custard, phew, I’m feeling full just thinking about it.
Then we got down to the serious nature of the Easter Egg Hunt. This event was originally organised for the grandchildren of our members who were visiting the island but proved to be so popular with the adult members – particularly telling – and is continued to this day. You wouldn’t believe how competitive these guys are, we almost had fisticuffs in the car park. The Egg Hunt was won jointly by Tracy Ruck and Alison Beez after much deliberation; there appeared to be a considerable amount of ‘egg swapping’ going on…
Our final event was the Easter Bonnet Parade. This again was fiercely competitive, as you can see by the following images. Our winner was Alan Ruck who was rather pleased with his entry of a lounging bunny which to my eye looked more like road kill but who am I to judge? I’m just happy to see our members having a fabulous time.
Incidentally, the social side of the club is very popular. Joining our club as a social member is a great way to mingle and meet new friends if you are feeling at a loss. You don’t have to sail to enjoy our company. There is a myriad of local information / experience available if you are new to the island which we are happy to pass on.
In other news the March Sailing Series was won by Roger Crackett & Lindy Anderson in their boat ‘Way To Go’.
The Winter Racing Series was won by Tony Edwards in his Laser ‘Fox’
This is PISC’s 25th Anniversary Year & we will be celebrating it throughout the year with special sailing & social events.
On Sunday 12th May in the afternoon we will be holding a Pursuit Race at Agios Georgios, Peyeia. The slowest boats will start first with the faster one’s starting at time intervals afterwards. The idea being that everyone should finish at about the same time. That’s the theory but in practice……..well we will see. But it makes for interesting viewing and may well include a circuit of Geronissos, weather & wind direction permitting.
The PISC Summer Regatta is scheduled to take place over the weekend of the 8th & 9th June with visiting sailors taking part.
The PISC Annual General Meeting will be held at 10am on May 17th at the Clubhouse.
We have some amazing events coming up in April and May including an afternoon tea where one of our members will be hosting a ‘Colours’ afternoon. Our very own Julie Saunders has over 20 years’ experience giving advice on what we should be wearing to flatter our body shapes and what colours the outfits should be. We have our regular Pudding Club which is always very well attended. Who can resist an evening full of delicious desserts? We also have a Car Treasure Hunt that takes us all over the island, picking up clues and generally hassling shop keepers (who are asked in advance to participate of course!) to win big prizes. When I say ‘big’, I mean a bottle of wine but it’s all done in the spirit of community and friendliness.
PISC has a regular newsletter entitled SCUTTLEBUTT which informs members of events, training programmes, the social calendar, race results and boats for sale. This is prepared weekly by editing chimp Roger Crackett with contributions by board members and any other member who has something interesting to say. The Club’s website [email protected] is managed by Lindy Andersen and Roger Crackett. We also have a Facebook page which anyone is welcome to join.
You don’t have to sail to become a member of our club, but come down and watch the sailors having fun on Thursdays and Saturdays or enjoy a warm welcome at our Clubhouse on Tuesday evenings and Friday lunchtimes.
We always look forward to welcoming new members. Check us out on pisccomcy.wordpress.com
