There are fewer races organised during the summer months and no race reports in this edition. Although, the weather can be very hot and humid at any time of the day we still try to run according to the schedule. There will be times when the schedule is adjusted and the runs may be shortened ensuring we stay safe. We also pay particular attention to staying hydrated before, during and after running. So, if you are new to running, returning to running or on holiday and you would like to join us at any of our sessions please take a look at our schedules which can be found at the top of our Facebook page or call Di on 97761015 or Gerry on 99926291 for any further information.
16th Annual Kathikas Fun Walk/Run:
This very popular event is due to take place on Sunday 3rd August at 6am the early start time is necessary to avoid the heat of the day. The event starts in Kathikas village and finishes at Agios Georgios. The event is well supported and enjoyed by West Coast Runners/Walkers. The report and photo will be included in the next edition.
Member Profile:
I am pleased to include a profile on Louise who is affectionately known has Lou by club members. Lou is one of the newer runners in the club; she joined the club never having run before and completed the C25K programme for the first time aged 42 in 2018.
Lou states, “Joining a running club was completely out of my comfort zone, it enabled me to meet new people make some great friendships and to achieve something I never thought possible, actually being able to run! The C25K programme was really structured and well supported and I completed this feeling really proud of myself and looking forward to the next challenge. I progressed onto 10km, but it was a bit hit and miss, working full-time and with 3 dogs at home I struggled to fit the regular running in. I didn’t like running in the heat of the summer and didn’t like the cold and dark of the winter so I was a bit of a selective runner and didn’t feel very committed… in recent years I have helped Mentor the C25K, Marshalled the races that I’m not capable of running and generally enjoyed being part of the West Coast Runners (WCR) family of runners. Last year I actually managed to keep the running going, 3 times a week all summer, enjoyed trying speed training and gave hill training a go. I took part in some road races, tried my first Trail Race and have managed to complete 2 Half Marathons, the 1st in Novembers Run for Autism and the 2nd in Ayia Napa both were certainly a challenge and something I never thought possible for sure. I’m not going to break any records or win any trophies, but what I enjoy about running with WCR is the mix of runners that we have, with lots of different abilities and running experience. We have a great core of experienced runners who are amazing role models and great at supporting new people to get them into running or to help existing runners to improve or achieve their goals. Personally I never thought I would enjoy being a member of a running club, but I love it. WCR has been a great support, getting active and meeting fab people who I consider to be great friends. Running isn’t for everyone but if you’ve never tried it or want to get back into running I’d highly recommend trying out our friendly club.” Lou has progressed extremely well and is a well-liked member of the club. Well Done!
Social Events:
Koullia Traditional Boat Outing:
On the 29 June several members, family and friends enjoyed a trip on the Koullia Traditional Boat, which is a popular social. The boat left Latchi Harbour at 10.30am for the Blue Lagoon. Plenty of time for swimming in gorgeous crystal clears waters. To our surprise there was a small boat selling ice-cream and drinks, some of us swam up to the boat and enjoyed ice cream standing up and leaning on the floating tables. Amazing! The BBQ lunch was served at 1pm consisting of Souvla, couscous, salad and garlic bread, with watermelon after. Wine or orange juice was served with the meal. Once again, a great day out was had by all.
Glamping Weekend:
Eight ladies, namely Claire, Di, Jo, Laura, Louise, Rita, Ruth and Viv from West Coast Runners (WCR) descended on the camp site, near Zygi for a girly weekend with enough food and drink to last at least a month! The food and drink started the moment they arrived, including a birthday cake for Di and just a few hours later, all enjoying a delicious spaghetti bolognaise made by Claire accompanied by copious wine. As usual, fun, games and lots of laughs followed. However, WCR Ladies are very serious runners and even after an evening of good food, games and wine, they were out running by 7am the next morning, such dedication! The afternoon was spent on one of the small beaches near the camp site, but as well as the usual sun bed and parasol; you were given a small bowl to bathe your feet afterwards! Saturday evening was BBQ night, with enough food to feed the entire camp site and of course, more drink, followed by Jenga, cards and spoons, unfortunately Di got a bit brutal playing spoons, just by being too competitive! After another late night, up early on Sunday for a 7am run, the commitment by WCR Ladies is just truly astounding! However, all goods things have to come to an end and it was time to depart from this lovely camp site Sunday morning, all were sorry to go, but plans to return again next year for more fun in the sun. Sounds like you certainly had a lot of fun.
West Coast Walkers
Don’t forget we also have our walking group that meets every Monday morning. The walking group is increasingly popular and is open to anyone who enjoys walking, meeting like-minded individuals, experiencing walking along the coast and exploring in and around the Paphos area. We welcome all walkers whatever your ability, young and the not so young! There is something for everyone to enjoy. Please see the West Coast Walkers Facebook page for meeting points and start time.
Happy Running/Walking Everyone!
