Trees and Bees

The recent environmental conference in Glasgow went as one would expect. Despite the overwhelming evidence of the impending environmental disaster facing the world getting agreement from countries to reduce their consumption was always going to be a big ask. The outcome of the discussions showed that the needs of today outweighed the concerns for the future.

I am sure that many of us feel impotent in the face of the enormity of the challenges to the environment. But we can all do something to help. Rotary Clubs around the world are involved in environmental projects and Paphos Aphrodite is no exception. We are involved in two projects that seek to make a difference.

Plant a million trees is a Cyprus initiative designed to increase the number and variety of trees on the island. Our club has already planted trees in Choletria and we are ready to go with tree planting in Letymbou. We are planting trees donated by the government as well as some we have paid for as a club. We intend to continue working with the project for the foreseeable future and certainly aim to plant a thousand trees.

Rotary Cyprus has started a project to encourage bees across the island. Bees are in danger and need our help. The Pollinator Project also encourages tree planting, of species that are favoured by bees as well as producing educational materials that will encourage a better understanding of the crucial role of bees in pollinating all flowering plants. Our club is actively cooperating with other Rotary Clubs and you will soon see displays in parks and leaflets about pollination.

We realise that the efforts of our club can only contribute in a small way, but many small contributions can add together to make a massive difference.

On a different topic we continue to work towards a polio free world and here Rotary has made a very significant contribution. Clubs across the world have contributed millions of dollars, euros, yen and pounds to fund vaccinations against polio. Vaccination is the only way to eliminate this terrible disease and we are at the point where polio is endemic in only two countries. We hope to see the elimination of polio in the next few years. Now that is a real contribution to the good of humanity.

Finally, don’t forget to come and visit our gluhwein and sausage stall in Kennedy Square later in December. All profits go to fund projects such as those described above.

Oh, and a Happy Christmas to all.
