Members of the Royal British Legion, Paphos Branch have held a Lunch to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

On Saturday 4th June, on a sunny Cyprus afternoon, as London prepared for the ‘Concert in the Mall’, local members gathered at Sail at Castle in Paphos Harbour to honour the Queen and enjoy the Jubilee celebrations.

After lunch and a loyal toast to the Queen, the Chairman of the Branch, Alan Hodgson, presented guest of honour Harry Fenwick, from Kouklia, with the keys to a mobility scooter which had been provided under the auspices of the Royal British Legion and also invited him to cut the ‘Jubilee’ cake.

(Captain) Harry Fenwick is 99 years old, Scottish and a D-Day Veteran. Formerly of the 9th Bn. The Cameronians. Harry, a Lieutenant in June 1944, waded ashore in the early hours of D Day onto Gold Beach at Arromanche, safely weathering a storm of Artillery and small arms fire; he then took part in operations to clear and secure the allocated beach landing area.

As the ‘breakout’ from the beachhead began, Harry became involved in the battles of Bayeux, then Falaise and finally Caen. It was during the latter operation, in August 1944 and by then a Captain, acting Major, that he was wounded in the back and abdomen by a German Mortar round necessitating his evacuation from the battlefield, via a Field Hospital to Llandaff Hospital near Cardiff. Harry was finally demobilised in May 1947 at York.

After a full life, visiting and working in many countries, He settled in Cyprus some 30 years ago where he has become a well-known and popular figure in his local community.
