Sunday 15th – WELL OF THE FRANK CIRCULAR WALK

Grade 2 – 6miles/10km – Meet at 0930

Walk Description – This is an easy walk in a beautiful forest of pines and carob trees in an area carpeted with plants & flowers. We will enjoy spectacular views all around the plateau. To the east, we can admire Alektora village and the vineyards and cultivated fields terraced down the valley. We then turn inland to wander for about 2 miles, passing by a goat farm. The white wind turbines will be accompanying us today during the walk, on our right for half the way and on our left side on our way back to the starting point. After 3 miles, we can admire Paphos district, with views to Aphrodite’s Rock and the Aphrodite Hills complex.

We continue our walk in the forest for about 25 minutes and then we go downhill for about  200 m to reach the old Roman road. Here we can see the old “Well of the Frank“ and the Hani, which is about 300 years old, partially restored in 2005, opposite the horse stables of Aphodite Hills. Lunch will take place in the yard of the Hani. A great opportunity for those attending the walk for the first time to admire the local architecture of that time. After lunch, we continue our walk by passing the little church of Ayios Georgios. Following a slightly uphill tarmac road and then, after admiring the goats and sheep that are likely to be feeding freely and the wind turbines (now on our left side), we will go downhill in order to return to our cars.

NOTE: even though the walk is very easy, good footwear and a stick are advised; bring a packed lunch

Directions to the meeting point:

Leave the Limassol – Pafos Highway at the Pissouri-Alektora exit, and park your cars at the Rantzo Cafe. We will car share from there and depart in convoy, through orchards and farmland and then we follow a rough track through the vineyards and up the escarpment. Reaching the top of the hill, we will park at the beginning of the large plateau ready to start our walk.

Sunday 29TH – TROZENA-GEROVASA BRIDGE CIRCULAR – New Walk

Grade 3 – 6miles/10km – Meet at 0915.

Walk Description:- This is a new walk around two deserted vilages, discovered by Antonio Basile and lead today by Karina Wild and Sue Todd.

We start descending for a short while on the roughly surfaced main road to Kidasi and soon we take a left side path winding down beside the small river, which runs near Gerovasa deserted village. After ten minutes we start to climb along a path which steepens gradually in order to reach the ridge of the hill, where, after half an hour we will be rewarded with stunning views of the valley and sea beyond. Our climb comes to the hardest point, a short ascent of 50 metres which represents the only real challenge of our walk.

From this point it will be all going down for another hour, contouring the flank of the hill until we reach a pleasant shady green spot where we can rest and have our lunch snack. There is the possibility of exploring the deserted village of Trozena and the miniscule church of St George. Then refreshed we climb back to the main road and descend in a very short while to reach our parking area near the bridge, an incredible structure in metal and wood capable of supporting the weight of 8 tonnes, built by British engineers at the begining  of the 20th century.

Bring a packed lunch

Directions to the meeting point:

From Erimi Bridge take the main road north going through Kantou, Souni, Kivides and Agios Amvrosios and straight on past the turning for Pachna. Continue until the sign for Mallia where you turn left. Follow the road, then pass the bridge keeping left and then turn left at the sign for Mousere. Next at the fork go right at the sign for Kudasi. Follow the rough winding road for a couple of kilometres, and pass a sign for Trozena on your left. From here go down to the picturesque bridge and park before or just after it. The walk will start from here.
