It has been a busy month; I have had visitors from Kuwait and South Africa, which has given me the amazing opportunity to show case Cyprus. It has and continues to be such a privilege and pleasure to show friends the Island. Then we went onto to Synod, which is the annual gathering of representatives of the churches of the Diocese with the Bishop. The Synod meets to consider matters affecting the order and good governance of the Diocese. It was an amazing experience and it was wonderful to see old friends and to make new ones.
As promised, each month we will share stories from the pews about how people came to be at St Barnabas and why they chose to stay.
This is Edna’s story:
“In the midst of a personal crisis, there comes a time when one seeks solace and a place of refuge. For me, that journey led to St. Barnabas’—an unexpected sanctuary that welcomed me with open arms. Since moving to Cyprus, I had been part of a small independent church, a close-knit community where everyone knew each other. However, during a particularly challenging period in my life, I felt the need for a change. I needed somewhere I could find a bit more anonymity, a place where I could quietly heal and reflect without the constant scrutiny of familiar faces.
Never having attended an Anglican church before, I decided to give it a try. The idea of exploring a different denomination was both intriguing and daunting. Little did I know, this decision would be a turning point in my spiritual journey.
From the moment I stepped through the doors of St. Barnabas’, I was met with a warmth and kindness that I had not anticipated. The congregation was welcoming and caring, offering a sense of community that was both genuine and comforting. It was a surprise to find such a nurturing environment where love and support were abundantly provided. I was also impressed with the nature and depth of the teaching and the obvious love for God and for one another. Although an English-speaking church it comprises of people from several countries and church backgrounds who share a care and commitment for the local community.
St. Barnabas’ became more than just a place of worship; it became a haven where I could rebuild and find strength. The experience taught me that sometimes, stepping out of one’s comfort zone and embracing the unfamiliar can lead to the most profound and life-changing experiences. There are also significant social opportunities which allowed me to get to know people at a deeper level and make many like-minded friends.
In the end, St. Barnabas’ was not just a church—it was a community that helped me navigate through a difficult chapter in my life, providing the love and support I so desperately needed. It still does, and I hope I can provide those things to others.”
This is Bob’s story:
”The question has some obvious answers and also several that may not occur to you at first. I am a practicing Christian and I was very pleased to find St Barnabas when my wife and I moved here. It allows us to worship in our native English language and really feel the Holy Spirit active in our lives, as we attend formal and informal events that involve prayer and music for worship. Because it is “alive” the church has friendly and informative groups that give us knowledge, satisfaction and entertainment. Faith in Christ is a “doing “opportunity for us both and it makes for a happy feeling as we grow older.”
Come join us, we look forward to welcoming you to the family.
