Anon’s holiday experience:
“The holiday season keeps us all extremely busy, we are out shopping, planning menu’s, Christmas presents, parties and some of us are even planning holidays. This year was a real eye opener for me. There are so many people who are alone over Christmas and New Year, this year I found myself in that exact situation. It is something we never really want to talk about but I have been convicted by God to be honest about how I felt, making me acutely aware of how people must feel.
My holiday plans changed, I was planning to go away after Christmas but things changed and I stayed home. I was invited to Christmas lunch and was seeing friends on the weekend but the real test came for me when I had to spend a week alone, it was cold, rainy and bleak. I am an extremely sociable person so to be left alone for a whole week was sheer torture for me!
Everything just seemed worse, the weather, the way time dragged on, looking at social media posts, remembering what we did last year and realizing that you can so easily slip into depression if you are not careful. I thought of all the people who said, “call at any time” or “if you need me to come over I will” but you actually become stuck, thinking no-one cares, and maybe they actually don’t but I realised that if, I had actually picked up the phone someone may well have responded. I didn’t, I was maybe too afraid to be a pest or to inconvenience people, I didn’t want to invite myself over especially if I wasn’t asked in the first place. All these thoughts going through my mind, driving me insane, then it was New Year’s Eve and boy or boy was that an eye opener! Most people I had spoken to were going to bed early, so, I did the same. I survived and I thank God for that!
I think if I learnt anything from this experience it is that you need to say you need help or you need company, people have the choice to say yes or no but if you don’t reach out no-body will ever know. Another lesson I learnt was that we need to randomly check up on people, find a way to make sure that we are connected, it is connection with God and each other that keeps us feeling fulfilled and alive to the possibilities of what life has to offer. If you live like this constantly, then please reach out, to your Church community, your friend circle or your neighbour we all need someone.
I thank God for my strength of character and my faith in God that carried me through. Don’t wait make the calls, you will be surprised by the reaction, maybe they just waiting for you to make the first move. God bless you all.”
If this is you, come join us, we look forward to welcoming you to the family.
