2024 is the 25th Anniversary of the founding of Paphos International Sailing Club
January proved to be another busy and successful month for the club. With the relatively good weather we enjoyed sailing on most Thursdays and Saturdays. The regular competitions at Agios Georgios, began again in the New Year. The results so far are:
The January Monthly Series
Won by Paul & Penny Hutton-Ashkenny in ‘Island Girl’
Penny and Paul Hutton-Ashkenny receiving their Monthly Series Mugs from Vice-Commadore Lawrence Mantz
The current position in the Winter Series
1st Place Tony Edwards in ‘Fox’
2nd Place Paul & Penny Hutton-Ashkenny in ‘Island Girl’.
3rd Place Ian Stevenson in ‘Sonic’
At our clubhouse on the Coral Bay – Agios Georgios road, we enjoyed a great social life every Tuesday evening and Friday lunchtime. Highlights were the highly successful Burns Night (complete with a piper and a superb haggis dinner thanks to Kay Melville and Jackie Wells). There were also quiz nights, wine and cheese evenings and a Pancake Day. The Valentines Night was a resounding success with the gentlemen sailors caring for their Ladies.
The club will be having our ‘Fitting Out Supper’ Saturday 23rd March: this is normally to celebrate the time when members ready their boats for the forthcoming season after having been laid up during the winter. But of course we are lucky in Cyprus since we are able to sail the whole year round.
On Sunday 28th April we will be holding the PISC Open Day at Agios Georgios. The management team and members will be on hand to talk to anyone who is interested in finding out more about our fantastic club. We will even arrange for visitors to experience a trial sail with one of our experienced sailors. The Summer Regatta well be held on 8th & 9th June 2024.
Another major social occasion will be our Anniversary Ball with a Silver theme to celebrate our 25th Anniversary a little later in the year.
PISC was formed in 1999 by a group of sailing enthusiasts, the purpose being to promote all aspects of sailing and boating in Cyprus. The aims of the Club remain the same, which is to promote sailing and boating in a friendly self-help Club with a great atmosphere.
All our dinghy sailing is overseen by our RCS (Rear Commodore Sailing) John Huggett.
An OOD (Officer of the Day) is in sole charge of sailing / racing and all the duty members are in communication via VHF radio. Sailors are required to wear buoyancy / floatation vests and all PISC members are encouraged to be trained in First Aid.
PISC promotes safe sailing – safety is paramount. Consequently, we have two patrol RIBs manned by trained club members, as well as beach crew to assist in launching and recovering the dinghies. We conduct regular training sessions for existing and new members, the next one is in April.
You don’t have to sail to become a member of our club, but come down and watch the sailors having fun on Thursdays and Saturdays or enjoy a warm welcome at our Clubhouse on Tuesday evenings and Friday lunchtimes if you are interested in joining our club.
For the record Commodore Mick Dent confirmed that sixty new members joined Paphos International Sailing Club in 2023, comprising both young and old from fifteen different countries.
We always look forward to welcoming new members.
