We would like to introduce you to our Classic of the Month for October, “Miss Daisy”, a 1954 Morris Minor Convertible, which has been newly imported by her owner Tony Crow.
We hand you over to Tony so that he can tell you Miss Daisy’s story: – “When I finally succumbed to Steve’s (the Chairman) persuasion to join PCVC he immediately said, ‘now you have to get a classic car’. My first car was a 1954 Morris Minor which I have always regretted selling, so the decision was made. Fortunately, I soon found a Morris Minor for sale in Belfast. Not only did this date from 1954, but, it was the highly desirable original factory fitted convertible!
Another Club member, John Ross, put me in contact with one of his friends, who lives in Belfast, and, is a fellow Minor fanatic. He kindly agreed to inspect the car for me and produced a comprehensive report, which concluded that everything was as expected for a 70-year-old car. So, I decided to go ahead and buy it.
Shipping costs from Belfast are very expensive, so I decided to go and collect it myself, hop on a ferry from Belfast to Liverpool and drive it to the shipping agents warehouse in Essex. Surprisingly, post Brexit, this is not a problem provided you have all the correct paperwork. Insurance, however, was a problem, but I eventually found a classic car insurance company which provided comprehensive (including breakdown) cover for 1 month. The drive from Liverpool to Essex was a bit frightening (30 tonners thundering down the motorway are not compatible with a 70 year old car doing 50 in the inside lane) but she behaved impeccably, and made it safely without using any oil or water!
My Morris Minor is not perfect, but I plan to drive Miss Daisy as much as possible, whilst making improvements and keeping her running as long as I can. Helped by Steve she has now passed her MOT and is registered in Cyprus. I would like to record my thanks to all the PCVC members who have helped get her here and, on the road, and, in particular, Steve Wilkinson, John Ross, David MacCulloch in Belfast, and Paul Gannon.”
