When was the last time you saw a daffodil in a banana plantation?
Well, check out our photograph! The first Classic of the Month for 2024 is a daffodil yellow MG Midget, that is affectionately known as “Dilly”. This 1978 classic is owned by Annabel and can often be seen sprinting, (within the speed limits of course), around Banana Bay and along the Paphos coast road.
Midgets were manufactured by the famous British sport car company, MG, in their Abingdon factory for nearly 20 years. Designed as a small, budget priced, two-seat, open sports car, it originally only had a 948cc engine, similar to that which was installed in the Minor 1000. However, it was constantly improved and updated throughout its production life, with the final version, like Dilly, having an engine of 1500cc.The Midget proved to be popular in the USA as well as the UK with over 225,000 being produced between 1961 and 1980.
Dillys 4 cylinder 1.5 litre petrol engine has twin SU carburettors with pancake air filters and produces 65 bhp through a 4 speed gearbox giving a 0-60 time of 12 seconds. As this Midget dates from the 1970s she would have originally had rubber bumpers, to comply with US safety regulations, but these were removed by a previous owner. Annabel says she thinks this suits Dilly and will be retaining the “Sebring styling”, but would like the car to be returned to its original ride height, when husband Pete fits the correct suspension springs. (Hint, Hint!).
You can meet Dilly and other interesting classic vehicles at any PCVC meetings and events. For details check our Facebook page, or our website, (www.paphosclassicvehicleclub.com) or telephone 97760997.
