Paphos Classic Vehicle Club

Storms do not usually hit Cyprus during August, however, we have one for you this month! Our Classic of the Month for is an extremely rare VW Scirocco Storm.

Paphos Classic Vehicle Club

The Storm was the ultimate version of the mark 1 Scirocco being produced in small numbers between 1979/81 and, unusually, was built in the Karmann factory in Osnabruck and not the VW Wolfsburg plant. The VW Scirocco was introduced in 1974 as a high performance two door, four seat, sports coupe. These were powered by a straight 4 cylinder petrol engine driving the front wheels through a 5 speed manual gearbox.

The Storm was a limited edition of the Scirocco which combined a bit of 1980`s luxury with added performance. Only 500 of these cars were produced and they were only available in two metallic colours, with contrasting leather Recaro seats. Fuel injection had been added to the engine which now produced 108hp, giving the car a top speed of 115mph and an acceleration from 0 to 60 in 8.8 seconds. That was faster than a Porsche 924!

Our August “Storm” is owned by Muna Stephen who purchased the car with her late husband, Ian, in the UK from the first German owner in 1983, with the number plate RFE 909W. It was imported to Cyprus in 1998. The car is in a beautiful condition, resplendent in its original metallic dark brown paint and tan leather interior. Muna keeps and drives her Storm in memory of her beloved husband, Ian.
