Last month this column looked back briefly over the last 25 years, since the Paphos Aphrodite Rotary Club was founded. So what of the future?
One thing is certain- we need willing and committed members. This presents something of a problem as it seems that fewer and fewer people are prepared to live up to the Rotary motto – SERVICE ABOVE SELF. Whatever the reasons are it seems that the idea of joining with others in support of good causes has dwindled and individualism is the order of the day. There are, of course, noble exceptions to this generality – helpers in Charity shops spring to mind. But over my 70 years I have seen a decline in volunteering and unselfish working for others.
Our aim for the future will be as it always has been – to help those who can benefit from it. Our two major charities are Friends Hospice and Maria Lasidou (working with those with learning difficulties) but we also send money to areas which have undergone climate disasters and help individuals.
Nothing will stop us from continuing with our efforts- we are planning our third Rock concert in the summer – but we would welcome anyone who wants to join us and help our team. We are celebrating our Silver Jubilee at the Anemi Hotel on May 28th and all are welcome. Enjoy a great evening with music from Melissa Williams and meet us. Oh and you can also join a toast to the next 25 years of service above self.
