Happy New Year to all your readers, and our Pafos United Walking Football Club members and their families. I can’t believe it’s 2025! We have an extremely busy year ahead of us as we look to increase our membership of 100 members.
Don’t forget you don’t have to have played the game previously, it doesn’t matter on your sex, there are just age limitations – men have to be over 50 years old (although there could be some dispensation for those not far from 50 and looking to get fit and meet new friends) and women have to be over 35 years old.
So what have we been up to? What have we got coming up? Well we’ve had a Christmas break, and welcomed the New Year in with our WFiC Jeavons Eurotir League matches (Sunday 12th January) where sadly one of the teams weren’t able to attend and so forfeited the points – but currently the league looks like being won by ENAD Panthers who are top after 12 matches.
Results:
- Tremithousa Tigers 0-1 ENAD Panthers
- Pafos Pirates 0-2 Tremithousa Tigers
- ENAD Panthers 4-0 Pafos Pirates
ENAD Panthers have 32pts, Tremithousa Tigers are 2nd with 20pts, and Pafos Pirates are 3rd with 14pts. Most goalkeepers are up for Player of the Tournament with Antonio (ENAD), Paul Nicholls (Pirates) and Dave Chatterley (Tigers) all have 4 nominations along with outfield player Andros (ENAD) also with 4 nominations.
When it comes to goalscoring, Andros of ENAD has 11 goals, Ian Charlesworth (Tigers) has 7 and Marc Whiteside (Pirates) has 5 goals. The last league matches will no longer take place in February, the new date is Sunday 9th March at 08.30am.
We will have our PUWFC Open Day by the time you are reading this article where we were expecting people to visit and come and see what ‘Walking Football’ is all about – we put on coaching/skills training and a few demonstration games to showcase what it’s all about. We were helped by PUWFC Council members along with Paul Brock and Marc Whiteside and we invited our Podcast (Lets Go 4 A Little Walk, Episode 1 now available on Spotify and there is also a link on our Facebook page – Pafos United Walking Football Club) sponsors ‘Polycarpos Philippou & Associates LLP in Paphos (thanks Rafaela), along with both Samaritans (thank you Ian Geddes) and Tala Cat Park (thank you Linda).
We have a lot coming up in the next year including 2 international tournaments firstly 5th & 6th April we are holding the JEAVONS EUROTIR TROPHY where we’re hopeful to have a number of UK and European clubs enter the competition along with some local clubs, then 27th & 28th September we’ll be hosting the CHASE BUCHANAN CUP (this will be the 3rd year Chase Bucanan have been sponsoring the event, so thank you Gill).
Let’s also take this opportunity to inform you that Pafos United are a co-founding member (along with ENAD Panthers in Polis) of the new organisation WFiC (Walking Football in Cyprus) and they’ve just announced that they have been accepted as a member of the world governing body FIWFA (Federation of International Walking Football Associations) and the WFiC i am sure will be looking for new clubs to join them with their journey (you can find out more on their website www.wfic.com.cy and as a result of this some of our players and ENAD players may be eligible to represent a Cyprus national team as they’re arranging trials this month to take a squad of Over 50s to the World Nations Cup in Spain 21-25 October.
On the international front we would also like to congratulate one of our favourite Pafos United members, Paul Nicholls who is one of our goalkeepers and has recently been selected to play for the England Walking Football Association Parkinson Team and will be playing in Tampa, USA. Paul has been a stalwart and a credit to the club, offering guidance and coaching and he’s obviously done well in the WFiC Jeavons Eurotir league as well with 4 nominations for Player of the Tournament thus far! Well done Paul.
