News From The Anglican Church of Paphos – July 2022

June proved to be another busy month. Not least because of the many events both here and back in the UK, staged to celebrate the Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

Before that, at the end of May, following the lifting of Covid restrictions, our annual Ascension Day Service of Holy Communion in Pikni Forest, Peyia was reinstated. The service was well attended by members of our three churches and followed by a ‘bring your own’ picnic lunch.

On Saturday 4 June, church members were joined by their friends, family and neighbours for a Street Party to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. Essentially a fundraising event, raising over 1,750 euros for church funds, it was the camaraderie amongst the 100 guests which made the occasion so special.

The support given from the volunteers was immeasurable, we knew it was going to be a huge task and every one of them stepped up and gave more than was expected. There were sideshows such as Play your Cards Right, Get the Ball in the Box, and Where did the Corgi bury its bone?, a raffle and Tombola. A DJ provided the music and even karaoke for the brave. A ‘Best Crown’ competition under 21’s had two little girls who won and Angela Hamilton won the over 21’s – this was a difficult decision as people had been very creative. The 50’s Quiz was won by members of St Luke’s, who each received a prize for their efforts.

The afternoon finished with the reading of a message from her Majesty and of course the toast to her continued good health and long life. It was a truly unforgettable occasion and will be cherished by all who attended.

Sunday 5 June saw the reinstatement of our 6.00pm service on the first Sunday of each month at Ayia Kyriaki (by St Paul’s Pillar), Kato Paphos.

As we go to press, the special service with the theme of ‘I know the plans I have for you’ was held on Friday 24 June at 2.00pm at St Stephen’s Church, Tala, to mark the World Day of Prayer. This was well supported by both regular members of our congregations and visitors.

There are no special events or special services planned during July and August but we anticipate an increase in visitors and offer a warm welcome to tourists attending our regular Sunday and weekday services. These are as follows:

Ayia Kyriaki (by St Paul’s Pillar), Kato Paphos
Sunday – Sung Eucharist at 8.15 am
