News from St Barnabas’ Anglican Church, Limassol and St Lazarus’ Church, Pissouri

As expected, the last few weeks have been extremely hot, our pace has slowed down and not as many events are taking place at church. However, we are still looking forward and planning for the future, next month regular groups and meetings will resume and friends who moved to cooler climes for the summer will have returned.

If you have never visited St Barnabas Church in Limassol then you are missing a treat. The church aquired the land and the building started in 1913, after a lot of fundraising and much hard work.To the delight of the congregation, the first service was held on 12th September 1915. Several additions were made over the years including the building of the church porch in 1925 and a west door in the same year. In 1928 a new altar and stone font were installed and dedicated. In 2002 it was decided that an extension was needed at the rear of the church, fundraising events were held and donations came in until the 30,000 Cyprus Pounds required for the project was raised, building work went ahead and the extension was officially opened and dedicated by Bishop Clive Handford on 15th June 2003. Move forward another ten years and with a larger congregation, many having to sit outside some days, it was decided to add another extension, this time to widen the building on the south side and give us space for another 40 seats. This time €60,000 was required to be able to complete the work and install carpets and furniture. God was really looking down on us, generous donations poured in, fundraising events were held and a grant from JEMT ensured that we could finish the work. It had been a long year but Bishop Michael Lewis dedicated our new extension on 2nd March 2014. Do come along and visit us, our doors are always open. Have a look around and see our beautiful stained glass windows, read the brass plaques, several are placed around the church commemorating people and events. Perhaps you would just like to sit quietly and let the Holy Spirit wrap around you, or you may wish to light a candle in memory of a friend or loved one. St Barnabas Church is open to all and if you do decide to join us for our Sunday worship we promise you a warm welcome.

Next month we we welcome Rev John Attenborough to Limassol as the new Chaplain for Mission to Seafarers, we shall hear more about his work once he settles in.

The table top sales continue to be very popular, the next one is on 3rd September, please contact Nora to reserve a pitch or come along on the day to offer help and support, there is always lots to do and and you may even find yourself a bargain.

Next month we shall start thinking about collecting items to go in Christmas boxes, which will be collected and distributed by the Mission to Seafarers, and handed out to the crews who will not be at home with their families for months. When shopping please put an extra item in your trolley – toiletries, stationery, a small torch, warm socks or gloves, we can sort them and pack them ready for collection and help bring a little joy to those at sea.

We continue to collect “Cans for Kids”in the wire cage by the front gate, the proceeds from the money generated from these cans goes to good charitable causes which we are keen to support.

Items of dried and tinned food continue to come in so that we can help the needy in our community, monetary donations are also welcome for the purchase of items when required.

On Tuesday mornings we haave our prayer group in church, often there is home made cake afterwards to enjoy with friends. Wednesday mornings we have our midweek communion service starting at 9.30am, the service lasts approximately 30 minutes and we are always happy to welcome new friends to join us.
