The days are warming up nicely and holiday makers are arriving for their summer vacations.
It is so nice to see friends returning to Cyprus and coming along to join us at church on Sunday mornings. Now the weather is more settled we can sit outside and enjoy their friendship over refreshments while catching up on their latest news.
Sadly we lost two very dear friends recently, David Henchie, a previous Church Warden at St Barnabas’ and although retired many years ago and going to live in Ireland, he and his wife Heather stayed in touch and friends from Limassol occasionally visited them when on holiday.
Another sad loss was Ruth Pelendrides, a much loved member of our congregation, she had been coming to St Barnabas Church for over 50 years and will be greatly missed by those of us who have known her and respected her commitment to the church and to her friends. The funeral took place in church on 18th May followed by committal at Erimi Cemetery.
Many of you will also know Rev Rod & Beryl Price, now retired and living in back in Wales, sadly, after a long illness their lovely daughter Yvonne passed away, we send them our love and blessings.
In March this year, Nick Sanders was licenced to St Barnabas as a Reader by Archbishop Michael and Nick’s wife Alex, who is an ordained minister, was also given Permission to Officiate (PTO) in the Diocese.. They arrived on the Island in October last year and Nick works in the Sovereign Base Areas, based in Episkopi. They live just outside Paramali and, when not working (he is on permanently on call!) he enjoys spending time at the sailing club, exploring the Island, cooking, and trying to remember how to play golf. So, what is a Reader? Readers are lay people who are called to a ministry of preaching, teaching, leading worship and mission, and who are licensed by the Bishop to an historic order of ministry that dates back for over 150 years. There is a careful process of discernment and selection, after which trainee Readers receive a rigorous theological training for three years, with further training available after licensing. After completing his training in the Chester Diocese in 2013, Nick was first licensed to the parish of Mellor, near Stockport before moving to Bunbury in Cheshire in 2018 where he and Alex were living until the move to Cyprus. Alex, now with Permission to Officiate within our Parish, will be presiding at St Barnabas Church from time to time, a very welcome addition to our worship team. Nick tells PALS that they are delighted to have found such a lovely, friendly and supporting Christian community at St Barnabas in Limassol and look forward to serving the Church on the Island in the forthcoming years.
On the 14th May, Rev Ian and Carol Nicholson welcomed a new grandson into the world, born in Germany and weighing over 9lbs he has been named Mitchell Arthur. We send our congratulations to the very happy grandparents.
Bishop Michael Lewis will be retiring from our diocese on 8th June, we wish both him and his wife Julia a very happy retirement and hope they can enjoy whatever life has in store for them now.
