News from St Barnabas’ Anglican Church, Limassol and St Lazarus’ Church, Pissouri – April 2023

We start this month with our Palm Sunday service on 2nd April , the Sunday before Easter, on which Christ’s entry into Jerusalem is celebrated in many Christian churches by processions in which branches of palms are carried. We will be blessing crosses made by members of the congregation and handing them out during the service.

At 6.00pm on 5th April, the fifth day of Holy Week, we have our Maundy Thursday service. It gets its name from the Latin word ‘mandare’, from which we get the word ‘command’. Christians remember Jesus’s command: “Love one another as I have loved you.” This is the day when Christians remember Jesus sharing the Last Supper with his disciples before his death on Good Friday.

The Lenten season is a 40-day period of prayer, fasting and self-discipline for Christians ending on the evening of Holy Thursday. According to the Christian faith Good Friday comes after Lent ends, this service commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. This is a sombre service, held at 10.00am during which the church is stripped of all crosses and artifacts.

On Easter Saturday from 1.00pm-4.00pm you are invited to take part in a series of prayers and meditations as we follow the Stations of the Cross. This has formed part of Christian devotion at Passiontide for many centuries because they enable us to engage actively with the path of suffering walked by Jesus. This will take place in the Chaplaincy garden.

Easter Sunday is the most important holiday in the Christian calendar (next to the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ), this is the day we celebrate His resurrection . Jesus Christ is the Son of God He was crucified and rose three days later. This is a service of celebration a time of great joy, the church will be decorated, we greet each other with the words CHRIST IS RISEN and we all say together HE IS RISEN INDEED, ALLELUIA.

Please make a note of all the services and dates, you are welcome to join us.
