In 2016 Jimmy’s Killer Prawns opened its doors in Limassol. With so many restaurants and tavernas here in Cyprus, why is this restaurant creating such a good name for itself?
Jimmy’s Killer Prawns isn’t a stand alone restaurant, it is part of an international group with stores in South Africa, Abu Dhabi, Egypt, Bahrain and, in the near future, the UK. This may be the first Jimmy’s restaurant in Cyprus but it brings with it the wealth of almost 30 years experience in the Restaurant business. The added bonus for Limassol is that this restaurant isn’t just a franchise, it is owned and overseen by Costi Lamprou, one of the network owners who has moved from South Africa to Cyprus.
Jimmy’s is centrally located on Griva Digeni. It is easy to find with plenty of offroad parking available for patrons. The restaurant itself is clean, simple and welcoming, in keeping with the franchises branding. The group prides itself on fast & friendly service, and this is apparent from the moment that you walk in through the door. The staff in the restaurant are friendly and professional and you instantly feel at ease.
The most important aspect of any restaurant is the food. Jimmy’s Killer Prawns concentrates on seafood with, as the name suggests, Prawns being the speciality. The emphasis here is the unique flavour with food being cooked on the grill. However, if you are not a fan of seafood Jimmy’s also has a selection of meat, poultry and vegan dishes that would satisfy any customer.
Fish & chips, Ocean Platter (prawns, mussels and calamari with rice and chips), Jimmy’s Sizzler (8 Prawns, rump Steak, vegetable stir fry, rice and chips), family Platter, Prawn and Fish combo and Sushi to name but a few of the dishes. Again, we were pleased to have the ever helpful and courteus staff on hand to talk us through the dishes. We are assured that the Cod really is Cod, no pretence here – you get what you order. This really is true on a Tuesday or Thursday when Jimmy’s has “Eat As Much Prawns As You Like” for only €16:90 per person.
At the start of the meal, a wooden board arrives at the table with freshly baked crusty rolls and three dips, tahini, garlic butter and a rich, dark, flavourful olive tapenade. They taste good, and we are off to a promising start.
I am a big fan of the South African Braai (BBQ) where meat is king and must be cooked to perfection. So, despite the large choice of seafood, I find myself opting for a rump steak in the hope that a restaurant with its roots in South Africa will deliver. When it arrives I am not disappointed. I asked for medium rare, and medium rare is exactly what I get. The meat is tender and succulent with that melt in your mouth quality of a good steak. The portion is a good size; a smaller 200g steak is available for those with a lesser appetite or for a lighter lunchtime meal. I understand why Jimmy’s is being recommended for the steaks.
However, we can’t come to Jimmy’s Killer Prawns and not try the dish that made them famous in South Africa, the Prawn Promise. Described as “a platter of addictive tasting prawns which are seasoned and grilled to perfection. Served with rice and our trio of sauces.” Again the dish does not disappoint, the prawns are excellent, but dipped in the sauces they really are “Killer Prawns”.
Overall the meal is of a very high standard. The portions are generous, cooked well, with great flavour. The prices are very reasonable making a meal at Jimmy’s highly affordable meaning you could treat yourself to a nice bottle of Arabella wine.
Although a sit down restaurant Jimmy’s Killer Prawns take-away meals are available and they have a delivery service within Limassol.
If you are planning a private function why not ask Jimmy’s Killer prawns to prepare a Seafood or Sushi Platter for you?
Don’t just take my recommendation, visit the Jimmy’s Killer Prawns Limassol Facebook page and read the reviews there. They are highly positive, my favourite starts “Amazing food. Amazing service”, which are the four words that describe our experience.
