Is the world running out of new music?

Dave Asher

Kate Bush… Wow she’s amazing, isn’t she!! Who is she? Unbelievable to think that it’s 27 years since “Running Up That Hill” was in the charts and now thanks to the TV series “Stranger Things” is now bigger than ever! A whole new generation of ears are now enjoying music from the 1970’s and 80’s and it looks as though the trend is set to continue with social media platforms awash with “reaction videos” to classic hits, as teens are played AHA, ABBA, Kate Bush and Kajagoogoo! Kate Bush is like Billie Eilish’s mum, AHA sound cold, ABBA look like teachers on holiday, and what is a Kajagoogoo?

Sadly, though the majority agree that music overall was better then than now with more individual styles and lyrics that were more of a story than a slogan! It’s alarming to think that “Generation Z” might not have their own music to cherish for a lifetime, as the world seems to have run out of new music. Music has always reinvented itself from Elvis through the 60’s rockers to the punk rock of the 70’s and gold plated coiffured 80’s into the reinvention of the music of the Beatles and Stones in the 90’s by bands such as Oasis et al. In fact Liam Gallagher, former leader of Oasis who is always the first to admit that his songs are influenced by the music he enjoyed growing up with is always alarmed that there is no new version of Oasis!

We have quite possibly reached the point where the classics are now the new music of today! In the US the largest share of radio listening is enjoyed by classic hits stations and television series and movies increasingly rely on the classic hits and those “long-forgotten” gems to provide an inspirational soundtrack! Gamers playing PlayStation favourites such as Grand Theft Auto realized long ago that the best fun was to be had while the O’jays were singing backstabbers! Let’s celebrate the amazing music that we’ve enjoyed over the past 60 years…now known as the hottest hits!

Let’s hear what happens next… the next big thing? Anyone’s guess…But the chances are we already have their greatest hits collection! If you need some clues take a listen to Viva FM! See you next time.
