On Tuesday 22nd May 2018 IMarEST Cyprus Branch, represented by Mr John Mealing, handed over a cheque for €600.00 as a donation to the Cyprus Ant-Cancer Society represented by their President Mr Michalis Christofides at the Crowne Plaza Hotel – Limassol.
The donation is a result of fund raising throughout 2017 where IMarEST organised a number of social events, including a pig roast, clay pigeon shoot, beach party, bike ride, golf tournaments and or annual dinner and dance, all generously supported by our members, friends and the shipping and marine community here in Cyprus.
This contribution was gratefully received by the Cyprus Anti Cancer Society which relies on donations to continue with their work. This donation will help enable the Cyprus Anti Cancer Society to continue providing pallative care to cancer patients and their families.
The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST)
Cyprus has long been known as an International Shipping Centre, In fact the maritime sector is one of Cyprus’ most successful industries, accounting for over 7% of the country’s GDP. It is the largest third party ship management centre in the European Union, and in the top 3 ship management centres globally. Cyprus is home to some of the world’s leading names in the global shipping industry and employs experienced Marine Professionals from around the world.
The Institute of Marine Engineering (IMarEST) is the leading international membership body and learned society for marine professionals, with over 15,000 members worldwide. Cyprus has its own branch of IMarEST which is based in Limassol, the heart of maritime business in Cyprus.
Who are IMarEST?
The Institute of Marine Engineering was initially founded in 1889 by a group of superintendents and sea going engineers at the London Docks. At that time there was no organization in the Port of London which could provide facilities for the extension of knowledge of marine engineers. After 127 years the aims of the Institute to enhance education and knowledge in the marine industry, remain the same. These are described in the by–laws and Royal Charter, which was granted in 1933. During the past 40 years with the introduction of new technologies in the off shore and renewable energy fields the Institute has brought together other engineers technologists and scientists. To keep pace with this the name was changed to The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). The Institute is represented at the International Maritime Organization as a non-government organization (NGO) and is a non-profit making organization.
The IMarEST has a strong international presence with an extensive marine network of 50 international branches, affiliations with major marine societies around the world and representation on the key marine technical committees.
What does the Limassol Branch do?
The Cyprus Branch of IMarEST was formed in 1993 and has a membership of 85. Each year the branch holds 9 technical presentations and 5 or 6 social events. The main event being an annual dinner dance with an attendance of approximately 300, mainly from the marine community. During the dinner dance a tombola is held on behalf of the Local Mission to Seafarers,
Money is also raised during each year at the various other functions. This is split between the Institute Guild of Benevolence and a local charity. The local charity nominated in 2017 was the Cyprus Anti – Cancer Society.
What is the Institute Guild of Benevolence?
When the Titanic sank in 1912 the engineers on board worked until the end keeping the power available for the pumps and radio station. They all perished at their posts. A charitable fund was set up to help the families of these marine engineers, the Guild of Benevolence. This fund exists to this day to support necessitous marine engineers and their dependents.
