Dementia is a term that describes the effects of certain conditions and diseases on a person’s mental ability, personality and behaviour. Alzheimer’s disease is one of the more common forms of dementia. It is characterised by a progressive loss of mental activities, such as the capability to remember, to think, and to reason. Short term memory is affected. People with dementia can suffer from confusion, personality and behaviour changes.
In the early stages of the condition, most people with dementia are able to continue doing the things they enjoy and can carry on with their lives, however as the disease progresses a person suffering from dementia is often aware of lost abilities; this can result in frustration, anger and embarrassment.
The Cyprus Alzheimer Association is an island-wide charity. The aim of the association is to promote public awareness, to care for patients living with the disease and to assist and give support to those caring for them.
The Paphos branch of the charity can support those living with dementia in the Paphos district through the provision of a nurse for home visits and patient care, and the purchase of equipment (such as specialised hospital beds, wheelchairs and other aids) for loan to those who need it. The branch also organises a monthly support group to provide a venue where those in similar situations can meet with others, share feelings and exchange experiences.
This is normally held on the first Wednesday of every month.
Beginning in September, the charity will host a Drop In Centre in the Polis area on the 4th Thursday of every month.
