Pano Arodes, Cyprus – This summer, eleven young volunteers from Latvia and Cyprus are proving that even a small mountain village can serve as the setting for an extraordinary international cultural event.
As part of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) Group Volunteering project, coordinated by Kulturas biedriba “Alternativa Realitate” (Latvia) and the host organization OSMTJ Foundation Cyprus, an international team is working side by side with the local community to create one of the island’s most unique cultural events – “Reborn of the Phoenix” the Festival of Myths and Legends in the village of Pano Arodes, located in the Akamas municipality.
The volunteer team consists of 11 participants, including 3 young people from Cyprus and 8 volunteers from Latvia. Together, they are transforming local legends, historical traditions, and the village itself into a festival of a new kind, where visitors don’t just watch what’s happening – they become part of the story themselves.
The festival’s concept, proposed by Akamas Municipality Mayor Marinos Lambrou, is being implemented with the support of Pano Arodes Mayor Matheos Stefanou and aims to showcase rural Cyprus through creativity, local community participation, and international cooperation.
Unlike a traditional village festival, which takes place at a single central venue, the Festival of Myths and Legends invites guests to explore the entire village. Streets, courtyards, and historic spots are transformed into living stages filled with light installations, artistic performances, interactive areas, and stories inspired by Cypriot mythology and local folklore.
Throughout the evening, guests will be able to discover hidden locations, meet legendary characters, participate in creative activities and workshops, and see Pano Arodes from a completely new perspective.
The festival will also feature a multinational stage program with music and performances by international artists, historical reenactments, and demonstration battles by warriors from different eras. The evening will culminate in a large-scale fire theater performance, in which- after several weeks of preparation alongside an international team of artists- some Latvian ESC volunteers will also take part.
For the volunteers themselves, this project means much more than simply helping to organize the festival. It is an opportunity to gain practical skills in project management, event organization, intercultural communication, teamwork, and engagement with the local community in an international setting.
At the same time, the local community gains new ideas, international experience, intercultural dialogue, and the energy of young Europeans working together to develop cultural life in the rural region.
The “Reborn of the Phoenix” Festival of Myths and Legends clearly demonstrates how the European Solidarity Corps brings together young people from different countries and helps them, together with local communities, create initiatives that have long-term significance. By combining Cypriot traditions with international creative experience, the project transforms cultural heritage into a vibrant space for interaction, discovery, and inspiration for both residents and visitors to the island.
As the festival’s creators believe: “To preserve a legend, you don’t need to put it in a museum; you simply need to invite people to experience it firsthand.”
