Announcement of the Ministry of Health regarding new cases of COVID-19 disease
The Ministry of Health announces that today, December 19, 2020:
– Two people have died of COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 89.
– 115 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 22 are in serious condition.
– A total of 10,304 disease detection tests have been performed, of which 4,323 by the molecular method (PCR) and 5,981 by the rapid antigen detection method (rapid test).
– 419 new cases of the disease were identified and confirmed by molecular tests (PCR), bringing the total number of cases to 17,476 . The 419 include 144 verifications from rapid tests of the previous days.
– In 215 cases from the rapid antigen test (rapid test) there was a positive result, which should be verified by the molecular method (PCR).
The current results are detailed.
A. Deaths from COVID-19 disease:
The two people who died with the ultimate cause of death attributed to COVID-19 are:
– A 81-year-old man with underlying diseases, who was treated at the General Hospital of Nicosia.
– A woman, aged 83, with underlying diseases, who was treated at the Limassol General Hospital.
Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 89, of which:
58 men (66%), and
– 31 women (34%).
The average age of those who die from the disease is 78 years.
B. Patients:
In total, 115 patients with COVID-19 are treated in OKYPY hospitals, of which 22 are in serious condition.
Of the 22 patients who are critical, 11 are intubated, two are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and nine to the Intensive Care Unit.
C. Molecular Examination ( PCR test ): From the 4,323 laboratory diagnoses performed today by the molecular method (PCR), 419 cases of COVID-19 disease were identified and verified, which resulted as follows:
- 121 cases from 778 samples taken through the process of tracking contacts of already confirmed cases.
- 2 cases of 1,112 samples taken as part of passenger and repatriate control.
- 125 cases from 1,634 samples taken through private initiative.
- 24 cases from 384 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
- 3 cases from 224 samples received under the program of referrals by Personal Physicians and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
- 144 cases from 146 samples taken for verification by the method of molecular examination of positive results detected by the rapid antigen test method in the previous days.
In addition, the following laboratory tests were performed without detecting a case:
- 45 samples taken from the inhabitants of Kato Pyrgos Tillirias.
D. Antigen rapid test: From the 5,981 tests performed with the rapid antigen test method, 215 positive results were obtained.
These 215 cases will be examined by the molecular PCR method, in order to be verified.
