Coronavirus: 197 new cases announced on Sunday

The health ministry announced on Sunday that 197  people had tested positive for coronavirus from 3,053 tests.

Most of the detections came through contact tracing and testing on private initiative.

Specifically:

  • Out of 300 samples taken through contact tracing 81 new infections were identified.
  • From 826 samples taken through private initiative, 73 cases were detected.
  • From 130 samples taken from labs at general hospitals 10 cases were found.
  • Out of 978 samples taken as part of the passenger and repatriate control system, 16 cases were detected.
  • From  254 samples taken under the schools programme, 4 cases were identified.
  • Out of 78 samples taken under the immigration programme, 4 cases were detected.
  • From 33 samples taken in the sporting sector, 1 case was identified.
  • Out of 250 samples taken as part of a sampling in Kyperounta, 8 cases were found.

In addition, the following laboratory tests were performed without any positives being found:

  • 198 samples taken under the programme of referrals by personal doctors were all negative.
  • 6 random tests done in Polis Chrysochous were also negative.

The total number of cases now stands at 4,563.

Famagusta General Hospital is currently treating 26 people, four of whom are in the high dependency unit.  In addition, five patients are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at the Nicosia General Hospital, while another eight people are being treated at the same hospital’s Covid ward.
