Coronavirus: 1 death and 220 new cases announced on Thursday

On Thursday the Ministry of Health announced 1 death and 220 new cases of COVID-19. The total figure includes 45 positive PCR tests verifying the positive results of rapid tests taken previously. Further details are below.

Announcement of the Ministry of Health regarding new cases of COVID-19 disease

The death of a 84-year-old COVID-19 patient with underlying diseases, who was treated at the Famagusta General Hospital, is announced. The ultimate cause of death is attributed to COVID-19. Thus, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 48, 32 men (67%) and 16 women (33%), with an average age of 75 years.

In addition, the Ministry of Health informs that a total of 12,099 tests were performed today to detect COVID-19 disease.

A. Molecular Examination ( PCR test ): Of the 12,099 laboratory tests, 5,935 laboratory diagnoses were performed by the molecular method (PCR), with 175 cases of COVID-19 disease, which resulted as follows:

  • Out of 707 samples taken through the process of tracking the contacts of already confirmed cases, 88 cases were identified.
  • Out of 1,331 samples taken through private initiative, 54 cases were identified.
  • From 289 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals, 7 cases were identified.
  • Out of 126 samples taken under the program of referrals by Personal Physicians and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics, 2 cases were identified.
  • Out of 1,552 samples taken in the District of Limassol as part of the control of employees who fall under the exemptions for movement to and from the Districts of Limassol and Paphos, 13 cases were identified.
  • From 261 samples taken in the Province of Larnaca in the context of control of workers who fall under the exemptions for movement to and from the Districts of Limassol and Paphos, 2 cases were identified.
  • From 2 samples taken in the Province of Famagusta in the context of control of employees who fall under the exemptions for movement to and from the Provinces of Limassol and Paphos, 2 cases were identified.
  • Out of 381 samples taken in the District of Nicosia in the context of control of employees who fall under the exemptions for movement to and from the Districts of Limassol and Paphos, 3 cases were identified.
  • Out of 172 samples taken as part of the laboratory test program carried out in nursing homes and other structures, 2 cases were identified.
  • Out of 222 samples taken under the control program of students, teachers and school staff, 2 cases were identified.



In addition, the following laboratory tests were performed without detecting a case:

  • From samples taken under the immigration structure control program, 133 laboratory diagnoses were completed,
  • From laboratory samples taken in the Province of Paphos in the context of control of employees who fall under the exemptions for movement to and from the Provinces of Limassol and Paphos, 400 laboratory tests were performed,
  • From samples taken as part of the passenger and repatriate control, 244 laboratory diagnoses were completed, and
  • From samples taken from the inhabitants of Kato Pyrgos Tillirias, 115 laboratory diagnoses were completed.

B. Rapid antigen detection test ( Antigen Rapid test ): Of the 12 099 tests, 6164 performed by the method of fast (rapid test antigen detection), with 103 positive results.

In addition, the positive result was verified by the molecular test method for 45 samples of positive results detected by the rapid antigen test method in the previous days. In addition, a positive rapid test result was not verified by the molecular test. Positive rapid antigen detection tests confirmed by PCR are included in the number of daily cases and the total number of cases below.

Therefore, based on the data so far, the total number of cases is 9,673.

C. Patients:

In total, 109 COVID-19 patients are treated in OKYPY hospitals.
