Living with Kidney Disease

By Paphos Kidney Association (PKA)

When someone is diagnosed with kidney disease, it affects more than just the patient—it also impacts their family and close friends. Emotional support, practical help, and understanding can make a huge difference in a patient’s quality of life.

Living with kidney disease often means regular medical appointments, dietary changes, and, in some cases, dialysis treatments. These changes can feel overwhelming. Having supportive people around can help patients stay positive and motivated.

Here are some ways to support a loved one with kidney disease:
 Listen and be patient. Sometimes they just need someone to talk to.
 Help with daily tasks, especially on treatment days.
 Encourage healthy habits like proper diet and medication routines. Follow the dietary advice given by the kidney care team.
 Learn about the condition so you can better understand their experience.
 Attend appointments or meetings when possible.

Emotional well-being is just as important as physical health. Many kidney patients experience anxiety, stress, or depression. Simple gestures—like a phone call, a shared meal, or a short walk together—can provide comfort and encouragement. If emotional stress persists, encourage them to speak with their healthcare team.

The Paphos Kidney Association supports people affected by kidney disease throughout the Paphos district by raising funds for essential equipment for local renal units and working closely with the hospitals that provide dialysis.

The Association also provides information for visitors who require dialysis while staying in Cyprus, including details of local treatment options. Patients and their families can contact the Association for general information and guidance about available support and local renal services. Questions requiring medical advice are referred to the appropriate healthcare professionals.

If you have a loved one living with kidney disease, your support can make a meaningful difference every day.
