As a new organisation we have some very exciting news to share with you and that’s that WFiC – Walking Football in Cyprus have now officially been accepted into the World football governing body FIWFA (Federation of International Walking Football Associations) membership as Cyprus’ representation for the sport of Walking Football. This is something our committee have been working very hard behind the scenes to achieve. Thanks should go to all our WFiC Committee, and Paul Carr (FIWFA) and Stuart Langworthy (WFA).
It now means that WFiC have as a result been invited to submit a CYPRUS national team to the WORLD NATIONS CUP in Spain 21-25 October 2025 and we’ve already accepted and paid the deposit. So now the hard work starts. We have already invited walking footballers to attend the trials we have scheduled at AM Fair Game Sports Center on 25th & 26th January (So they’ve probably already happened at the time you are reading this article) though we may be having another one on Sunday 9th February 2025 for those that were not able to attend the first two and for the coaches and selection panel to have a look at fewer players. The selected squad will be made up of 12 players aged over 50 and 2 coaches.
We are looking for sponsorship to cover all costs of this exciting trip and are hoping our community partners Pafos FC will be able to steer us in the right direction to obtain some prestige sponsors for this prestige event that is will be televised in parts of Europe and there will be live internet streaming of the matches.
Nearly 150 teams from around 50 nations will be competing in this second World Nations Cup event – the first took place 2 years ago at England’s St George’s Park National Football Centre where the England Over 50s triumphed to victory on home soil.
