News from St Barnabas’ Anglican Church, Limassol and St Lazarus’ Church, Pissouri – May 2024

Our new Chaplain arrived in Limassol on Thursday 4th April to take up her post as Parish Priest serving St Barnabas’ and St Lazarus’ Churches.

Reverend Deborah hails from Durban South Africa. She had worked in the marine insurance industry for almost 31 years. Whilst working full-time she studied for her Licentiate in Insurance and for her Higher Certificate in Theology. Reverend Deborah was ordained as a Deacon in 2020 and as a Priest in 2021. As part of her training she moved around her Archdeaconry gaining invaluable experience in the different church expressions. She gained invaluable experience as the interregnum at St Christopher’s Cathedral in Bahrain and went back home as the Priest-in-Charge at two very different Parishes.

When asked to describe herself, Rev Deborah responded with, “I am A child of God, a mother, a daughter, a friend, a mentor and a servant leader, who is cracked and imperfect but beautifully and creatively used by Christ. A courageous, vulnerable and forthright woman who is not afraid to go where God leads me, having the assurance that He has gone before me in all things.”

When Deborah was a Self-supporting clergy person, she balanced the demands of a Corporate job, the church and being a mother, all by God’s grace. There were many days when she felt inadequate and undeserving but was very quickly reminded by God that He chose her, He loves her and that He is the one who continues to equip her in all things that are asked of her.

Rev Deborah has a passion for young people, has a great respect for the not so young and longs to bring those in-betweeners back to church. She is a great believer in empowering all people, more especially women, young and old and would love to impact lives in a positive and meaningful way.

Finding herself in Cyprus, in ministry full-time, means that God has answered her prayers in a most spectacular way, proving that when we get out of God’s way, all things are possible. Rev Deborah is excited about how God’s plan unfolds for her life but more importantly for the Church community and the wider community of Limassol.

She loves spending time with her daughters, Zara and Amara, dear friends, loves playing sport (all types), reading, exercising, long lazy get-togethers with family and friends, is passionate about people, God and the Church.

As she said, she’s not perfect, has her moments of weakness, sometimes talks to much and listens to little, over-thinks, over-loves and can sometimes be too dramatic but she expects that these are things that she needs to continually work on and is reminded that God can and does use our Imperfections to His glory…

As she says, “If God can use a sinner like me then God can use us all..”

Reverend Deborah will be Licensed as the Priest-in-Charge at St Barnabas Limassol on the 11th of May 2024 at 1400 by the Venerable Christopher Futcher – Archdeacon in Cyprus.

Easter week at St Barnabas Church was a time of reflection, meditation, sadness and joy. Services were led by Rev Alex Sanders and Rev John Attenborough, the washing of feet and the stripping of the church took place on Maundy Thursday, a Tenebrae service was held on Good Friday and the celebrations took place on Easter Sunday with a packed church and a social gathering afterwards. The church had been decorated with bright yellow and white flowers which filled every space with colour and joy and brought smiles to everyone’s face as they entered the church.
