October has arrived – how did that happen!! It’s almost time to say the C word, but we won’t just yet, let’s leave it for another month. Thankfully, it is now a much nicer time of year for all runners out there. Everyone did well to get through the hot & sticky summer and continued with their training as per plan.
Athens Marathon
Claire, Christine, Di, and Viv are training for the Athens Marathon in November and it’s not so easy training for a Marathon in the Cyprus heat and humidity, but they continue to push on building up their weekly kilometres and distances. Smiling through the pain! Neil has also entered but unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to train, but we are forever hopeful that he’ll get there. Not forgetting to mention our lovely Ruth who cannot make Athens Marathon but is happily training to run a Virtual Marathon in November. We wish them all the best and hope their training progresses well with success in Athens and at home.
Monthly Handicap
Well done to all who have taken part in the handicap series, we are grateful to Alan Lovejoy who keeps us all in suspense each month wondering what the handicap will be this time. We are nearly there to finding out the winner for 2023.
Asgata Ultra
This race comprising 70k, 16k & 5k distances took place at the end of September. A few members took part, and their race report will be in next month’s issue.
Making Great Strides
Julia Zhu joined WCR in the summer and has written this piece, thank you Julia for your kind words.
“As a novice to running I felt very apprehensive at first about extending beyond one or two km. But running with a group made all the difference and encouraged me to go beyond my comfort zone. My limbs were very stiff for a week or two, but that quickly disappeared.
I started with 5k back in July this year and since then I have built up to 10k and developed a love for Saturday morning’s coastal runs. There are so many different routes around the west coast of Cyprus, and I have really got to know the local area where I live so very much better. What I really like about this club is the friendly support and encouragement everyone gives each other. The energy level is remarkably high, and many other members have a long history of long-distance success stories behind them. It is great to have improved my fitness and overall, I have just had a ton of fun. I feel so lucky and proud to be a member!”
So, if you are new to running, returning to running or on holiday & you would like to join us at any of our sessions please take a look at our schedules which can be found at the top of our Facebook page or call Christine on 97757159 or Gerry on 99926291 for any further information.
Happy Running Everyone!
West Coast Walkers
Don’t forget we also have our walking group that meets every Monday morning. The walking group is increasingly popular and is open to anyone who enjoys walking, meeting like-minded individuals, experiencing walking along the coast and exploring in and around the Paphos area. We welcome all walkers whatever your ability, young and the not so young! There is something for everyone to enjoy. Please see the West Coast Walkers Facebook page for meeting points and start time
