Larnaca delivers

PRC were out in force for the Radisson Blu Larnaca International Marathon on 16 November, with members taking part in the marathon, half marathon and 10K. Runners enjoyed blue skies and a cool start, and the flat coastal routes encouraged an early pace. After the first hour temperatures rose and the exposed stretch near the Salt Lake tested everyone.

We had several standout performances. Kat Osborne completed her first marathon in an impressive 03:57:11, Chris Coleman won his age category with 04:17:56, and Norah Mwanzu achieved a PB of 04:28:13. Half marathon results were equally strong: Jon Kew placed sixth in his age group with 01:32:44; Magda Wardacka-Taylor finished comfortably under two hours at 01:51:49; and PBs were achieved by Maggi Norgate (01:57:34) and Cassie Gill (01:59:38). It was a lively, well-organised event, enjoyed by all.

Three Amigos take on the Four Day Challenge

The Leptos Cyprus International 4-Day Challenge is one of Cyprus’ toughest running events, with four different races covering a total distance of just over a marathon. This year, three PRC members took part: event veterans Darrel Bressington and Jon Kew, and first-timer Gary Spiers.

Day one and Day four of the challenge involved a 6K time trial and a 10K road race. More gruelling in hot conditions, was Day two, an 11K hill run in the Akamas up to Pano Arodes. But it was Day three’s mixed terrain half that pushed our three amigos to their absolute limits. 14K continuous ascent was briefly rewarded by sweeping coastal views and followed by 5K of demanding downhill. Fortunately, sprits were lifted by PRC friends volunteering on the route.

All three have a plenty to be proud of. Jon Kew finished 38th overall and 3rd in his age category. Darrell Bressington successfully completed his 19th event and, after Day 3 nearly broke him, Gary Spiers was delighted to have succeeded in the toughest challenge he has ever faced.

Why is running with others better than running alone?
Longstanding PRC member Lee Stevens reckons there are at least six important benefits you get from running with others:
Running with others reduces the perception of effort, shared activity feels less taxing and provides a distraction from discomfort.
Natural synchronisation of breathing, stride and rhythm regulates pacing and creates a sense of flow.
Group running boosts motivation through some accountability and shared support.
Endorphins from running and oxytocin from social interaction enhance mood and build feelings of trust and belonging.
Running together can lift mental health, reduce anxiety and offer space to talk.
The social rewards are often as valuable as the physical ones.
