West Coast Runners Cyprus – April Update

There was limited opportunity to compete in running events during February; however, the start of the running season really has started to take off in March. The weather isn’t getting any warmer just yet, cold, wet and windy, but this doesn’t deter members training for up and coming races. Where is the Spring!! We continue to run together several times a week, in various locations, which include road runs and trails in and around Paphos. Take a look at the schedule on our Facebook page or website, www.westcoastrunnerscyprus.org for information.

West Coast Runners International has been busy again! In the form of Marc Slatter who completed in the Riyadh Half Marathon on Saturday 5 March. Saudi Arabia/ Riyadh held its first official Marathon/HM/10k and 5k fun run. The race started at 6.30pm due to temperatures, approximately 28C and sun including a winding uphill finish! Marc completed the race in 1:59:04, (which was unofficial) total distance 21.34. Congratulations Marc.

West Coast Runners were out in force for the Logicom Cyprus Marathon races including the HM, 10k and 5k fun run, held on the 13 March. We also had several of our overseas runners competing, namely Eve who completed the 5k, Maureen ran in the 10k as did Tina, who was second in her age group. Congratulations Tina! Dave also ran the HM. There were 17 members from Blackley 2 Run club (from Tina and Dave’s club in the UK). Who also took part in the various Logicom events.

Team Red volunteers also ran 3 Water Stations on the Marathon route. The weather for the Logicom was cold, wet and windy, all credit and thanks to them and all the other volunteers for supporting the runners in appalling weather.

Suzie having successfully completed the None to Run plan; continued with the Run to 5k plan with the aim to compete in the Logicom 5k Fun Run. Suzie felt apprehensive about running the race and the weather conspired against her, but Suzie actually enjoyed it so much she is now planning to start the Run to 10k plan. Suzie’s goal is to compete in the final day of the 4 Day Challenge, 10k road race in Paphos. Go for it Suzie!

If you are thinking about taking up running, just come down and meet us any Saturday morning at the Lighthouse Beach Café in Paphos. We commence our run at 8am, but we always have refreshments afterwards at the Café. This is an ideal run for beginners and more experience runs alike. Just look out for the red tops, you cannot miss us!

We recently reintroduced Hill Reps and Speed training, although these can be challenging, they are fun! (Look for them on the Schedule).

West Coast Walkers – continues to meet on Monday mornings, exploring the beautiful areas around Paphos. You are all welcome to join us – please see the West Coast Walkers Facebook page for meeting points.

West Coast Runners are a very friendly, easy-going club with a wide range of abilities and ages. We welcome all runners, would-be runners and complete beginners! Non-members can try a couple of runs with us with absolutely no obligation.
