News from the Anglican Church of Paphos – May 2022

After a long, cold, wet winter and a short mild Spring, Summer is now fast approaching. The change to fine weather means that many outdoor activities can be resumed, not least those of our church.

Saturday 14 May sees the resumption of our popular Spring Fayre which, due to Covid, has been ‘on hold’ for the last two years. Held at St Stephen’s Church, Tala the fayre is open from 10am until 2.00pm and provides a wide range of stalls including crafts, bric-a-brac, jewellery, plants, cards, cakes and preserves. Refreshments will be available as well as a Raffle.

On Thursday 26 May, Ascension Day, we will be reintroducing our open-air service of Holy Communion in Peyia Forest starting at 11.00am. This will be followed by a ‘bring your own’ picnic lunch. Everyone is welcome (please bring your own chairs).

Queen Elizabeth’s 70th Jubilee will be celebrated throughout the UK and in many Commonwealth countries during the weekend of Friday 3 – Monday 6 June. We hope to be hosting a lunch-time ‘Jubilee Street Party’ on Saturday 4 June at a venue in Sea Caves, Peyia. This 50’s themed event includes a buffet lunch, entertainments, music, a ‘sing-along and grand raffle.

Further information about the Street Party, how to obtain tickets (which must be purchased in advance) and details of the Spring Fayre and Ascension Day service are on our web site www.paphosanglicanchurch.org

A short history of St Luke’s Church, Prodromi (the third and last in our series)

St Luke’s provides a ‘middle of the road’ style of worship offering a mix of traditional and modern hymns, readings and music.

In 2002 Jack Harding, who had lived in Cyprus for many years, became aware of the need for a place of worship for the Christian immigrant workers living in the Polis area. In consultation with the Paphos Chaplain, the Reverend Marvin Bamforth and our friends in the Cypriot Orthodox Church, permission was granted for the lovely little Greek Orthodox Church, St. Nicholas, in the centre of Polis, to be shared by the Anglican and Latin Catholic communities.

Over time, the charming, unspoilt Polis area began to develop and gradually the regular Anglican congregation outgrew St. Nicholas’ and new premises were sought.

The present building in Prodromi – a former basement furniture store below a Kiosk – was rented. Bishop Clive Handford dedicated the building as St. Luke’s Church on 23rd April 2006. Within months the congregation had grown and outreach was made to the local community. The first Christmas over 60 people attended a service of carols and readings.

Such has been the growth in the number of regular worshippers that the building has been extended incorporating a new vestry and a separate large meeting room, The Jack Harding Room, for use by the local community. On 18th October 2008, St. Luke’s Day, Bishop Michael Lewis celebrated the Holy Eucharist and blessed the new extension.

St Luke’s members support many local charities and community activities, organise the annual ‘Praise in the Park’ service in Ayios Andronikos Park, Polis and raise funds for the Dreamland Mission Hospital, Kenya. The church also has a diocesan link with St Lukes Church in Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates.
