With over 500 functions, our liver is one of the hardest working organs in our bodies – but it is often the one that we forget to care for. Its main function is to rid our bodies of toxins from alcohol, medicinal drugs and the chemicals of everyday life. So, it makes sense to give it a helping hand! By incorporating the following foods into our diets on a regular basis, we can help to reduce the number of toxins and help boost our livers’ capability.

Have a look below and see the small changes you can make to your diet that will benefit you massively health wise!

Lemons and lemon water.

Lemons are one of the best foods for cleansing our digestive tract and liver.

Lemon water in the morning is a great start. There are two ways of making lemon water. You can simply add the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon to a mug of warm (not boiling) water. To release the most juice, place the lemon on the work surface and place the palm of your hand on it. Put your other palm on top and roll the lemon, using as much force as you can without splitting the lemon open. This releases the juice from the fibres inside. Another option – you can take a few slices of an organic lemon, put them in a mug and add boiling water. Leave to steep for a while and then add some cold water to reduce the temperature before you drink it.

Tip 1    If you find the water too sour, you can add some raw or natural honey for sweetness.

Tip 2    You may need to use the toilet more in the beginning – but don’t worry! This just shows that the lemon water is doing its job and should pass in a few days when your system has cleared out all the nasties.

Apples and Apple juice.

Just half an apple a day is enough to really give your liver a boost. Why not slice it (drizzle with lemon juice to stop it browning) and snack on it during the day?

Apple juice has all the same properties as the whole apple. As well as drinking it during the day, you could swap an alcoholic drink for apple juice served in a wine glass. That way, you will still feel sociable and can feel virtuous knowing how kind you are being to your liver.

Beetroot.

Beetroot helps to stimulate liver function. This includes fresh, bottled, sweet baby beets and juice.

Baby beets – like apples – make a great snack.

Carrots.
