Cyprus Rugby March 2022

Sadly, this game has now been cancelled.

On Saturday 26 March, Cyprus Rugby hosts Slovenia in the second of our home games in the European Conference 1 South division. The first home game was played last November against Croatia who, unfortunately, had a comfortable win.

After Slovenia, The Mouflons have a hectic schedule with an away game against Malta on 16 April and a further away game, the last of the 2021-22 season, against Israel on 30 April. It is going to be a tough time for The Mouflons with 3 games in a 5 week period.

Also, George Agathokleous, better known as George Polemi, will, provided he plays, win his 50th cap for Cyprus. Bearing in mind that only 4 games per year are played at this level, that 2 years have been lost to COVID and the first international for Cyprus was played in 2007; this is a magnificent achievement only missing a couple of games through injury throughout this 15-year period. Bravo George!

Internationally, the season culminates with a Rugby 7’s tournament in Belgrade in early June, at which Cyprus will participate with a development team made up primarily from players from the local Cyprus clubs. It has been a difficult time for the local clubs due to COVID and the loss of numerous players. The Federation’s efforts are focused on development to increase player numbers and look towards the future bringing on the younger developing players… but, it will take time.

The kick-off time for the match against Slovenia is 15.00 and the venue, Stelios Kyriakides stadium, Pafos (formerly known as Pafiakos, opposite the ‘old’ Debenhams store, now ERA.) Please come along and give your support to The Mighty Mouflons! Tickets are just €10 and can be purchased online at www.cyprus-rugby.com/tickets or at the gate on matchday. Under 16s go free.
