Announcement of the Ministry of Health regarding new cases of COVID-19 disease

The death of a 82-year-old COVID-19 patient with underlying diseases who was treated at the Famagusta General Hospital is announced. The ultimate cause of death is attributed to COVID-19. The total number of deaths with the ultimate cause of COVID-19 is 27, 18 men and 9 women, with an average age of 74 years. To date, 35 deaths of people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus have been reported in Cyprus, of which 77% (27 people) are due to COVID-19 and 23% (8 people) to other causes of death.

In addition, the Ministry of Health informs that, according to information received today by the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit from contracting laboratories, out of a total of 4,072 additional laboratory diagnoses, 222 additional new cases of COVID-19 were identified.

This is in addition to the earlier announcement of 92 workers at a Nicosia slaughterhouse who tested positive. This brings the total new cases on announced on Saturday to 314.



In detail, the current cases emerged as follows:

  • Out of 524 samples taken through the process of tracking the contacts of already confirmed cases, 60 cases were identified.
  • Out of 1,736 samples taken through private initiative, 94 cases were identified.
  • From 284 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals, 14 cases were identified.
  • Of the 1,008 samples taken as part of the Passenger and Repatriated Control, 44 cases were identified.
  • Out of 261 samples taken under the program of referrals by Personal Doctors and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics, 8 cases were identified.
  • Out of 202 samples taken under the control program of students, teachers and school staff, 1 case was identified.
  • Out of 8 samples taken under the immigrant structures control program, 1 case was identified.

In addition, the laboratory test of 47 samples taken as part of the sampling carried out by the KOP in Associations participating in its events was completed, without the detection of a case.

Therefore, based on the data so far, the total number of cases is 5,871.

In addition, the Famagusta General Hospital treats 53 people positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, five of whom are in the Intensive Care Unit. In addition, one patient was transported by intubation to the Intensive Care Unit of the Nicosia General Hospital, where a total of seven patients are being treated, while another nine are being treated in a COVID-19 ward.
