Coronavirus: 5 deaths and 419 cases announced on Tuesday

Announcement of the Ministry of Health regarding new cases of COVID-19 disease

The Ministry of Health announces that today, December 8, 2020:

– Five people have died of COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 68.

– 115 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 21 are in serious condition.

– A total of 10,910 disease detection tests have been performed, of which 4,208 by the molecular method (PCR) and 6,702 by the rapid antigen detection method (rapid test).

– 419 new cases of the disease were identified and confirmed by molecular tests (PCR), bringing the total number of cases to 13,286 . The 419 include 212 verifications from rapid tests of the previous days.

– In 218 cases from the rapid antigen test (rapid test) there was a positive result, which should be verified by the molecular method (PCR).

The current results are detailed.

A. Deaths from COVID- 19:

The five people who died with the ultimate cause of death attributed to COVID-19 are:

– A 76-year-old man with underlying diseases, who was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital of Nicosia.

– An 84-year-old man with underlying diseases, who was treated at the Limassol General Hospital, after being transferred from the Klimentio Nursing Home, Nicosia District.

– A 63-year-old man, without underlying diseases, who was treated at the Limassol General Hospital, after being transferred from the Kyperounta Multipurpose Center, Limassol District.

– A woman, 92 years old, with underlying diseases, who was treated at the General Hospital of Famagusta, after being transferred from the Multipurpose Center of Peristerona, Nicosia District.

– A 91-year-old woman, with underlying diseases, who was treated at the General Hospital of Famagusta, after being transferred from the Panagia Nursing Home, Limassol District.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 68, of which:

44 men (65%), and

– 24 women (35%).

The average age of those who die from the disease is 77 years.

B. Patients:

In total, 115 patients with COVID-19 are treated in the hospitals of OKYPY, of which 21 are in serious condition.

Of the 21 patients who are critical, 10 are intubated, three are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and eight to the Intensive Care Unit.

C. Molecular examination ( PCR  test )

From the 4,208 laboratory diagnoses performed today by the molecular method (PCR), 419 cases of COVID-19 disease were identified and verified, which resulted as follows:

  • 60 cases from 663 samples taken through the process of tracking contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 4 cases of 915 received in the context of passenger and repatriated control.
  • 121 cases from 1,630 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 19 cases from 361 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 2 cases from 251 samples received under the program of referrals by Personal Physicians and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
  • 1 case from 98 samples taken from the residents of Kato Pyrgos Tillirias.
  • 212 cases from 218 samples taken for verification by the method of molecular examination of positive results detected by the rapid antigen test method in the previous days.

In addition, the following laboratory tests were performed without detecting a case:

  • From samples taken under the control program of students, teachers and school staff, 50 laboratory diagnoses were completed, and
  • From samples taken under the immigration structure control program, 22 laboratory tests were performed.

D. Rapid antigen detection test ( Antigen  Rapid  test ): Since the 6702 test performed by the method of rapid antigen detection (rapid test), obtained 218 positive results.

These 218 cases will be examined by the molecular PCR method, in order to be verified.
