Coronavirus: 3 deaths and 289 new cases announced

Announcement of the Ministry of Health regarding new cases of COVID-19 disease

The Ministry of Health announces that today, December 4, 2020:

– Three people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 57.

– 111 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 17 are in critical condition.

– A total of 9,562 disease detection tests have been performed, of which 3,848 by the molecular method (PCR) and 5,714 by the rapid antigen detection method (rapid test).

– 289 new cases of the disease were identified and confirmed by molecular tests (PCR), bringing the total number of cases to 11,812 . The 289 include 56 verifications from rapid tests of the previous days.

– In 176 cases from the rapid antigen test (rapid test) there was a positive result which should be verified by the molecular method (PCR).

The current results are detailed.

A. Deaths from COVID- 19:

The three people who died with the ultimate cause of death attributed to COVID-19 are:

– A woman, 84 years old, without underlying diseases, who was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital of Nicosia.

– A 78-year-old man, without underlying diseases, who was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the Nicosia General Hospital.

– A woman, aged 94, with underlying diseases, who was treated at the Limassol General Hospital after being transferred from the Multipurpose Center of Peristerona.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 57, of which:

– 37 men (65%), and

– 20 women (35%).

The average age of those who die from the disease is 76 years.

B. Patients:

In total, 111 patients with COVID-19 are being treated in OKYPY hospitals, of which 17 are in critical condition.

Of the 17 patients who are critical, 13 are intubated, another 2 are in the Intensive Care Unit and 4 in the Intensive Care Unit.

C. Molecular examination ( PCR  test )

From the 3,848 laboratory diagnoses performed today by the molecular method (PCR), 289 cases of COVID-19 disease were identified and verified, which resulted as follows:

  • 90 cases out of 795 samples taken through the process of tracking contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 110 cases from 1,772 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 20 cases from 303 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 7 cases from 456 samples taken under the control program of students, teachers and school staff.
  • 4 cases from 87 samples taken from the residents of Kato Pyrgos Tillirias.
  • 2 cases from 37 samples received under the program of referrals by Personal Physicians and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
  • 56 cases from 57 samples taken for verification by the method of molecular examination of positive results detected by the rapid antigen test method in the previous days.

In addition, the following laboratory tests were performed without detecting a case:

  • From samples taken during the control of passengers and repatriates, 299 laboratory tests were performed,
  • From samples taken under the Immigrant Structures Control Program, 41 laboratory tests were performed, and
  • As part of the laboratory test program carried out in nursing homes and other structures, we had a result for 1 sample.

D. Rapid antigen detection test ( Antigen Rapid test ): Since the 5714 test performed by the method of rapid antigen detection (rapid test), obtained 176 positive results.

These 176 cases will be examined by the molecular PCR method, in order to be verified.
